I guess each area is different. We have some insanely skilled 3D guys at our field. There is a yak 54 (35% or so) that hovers that thing 6 inches off the ground while torque rolling it. He does rolling circles all day that are flat. People are just in awe of this massive plane doing remarkable things. I think seeing a little profile 3D is one thing, but seeing some of these giants 3D is quite another.
I don't think that anyone is seriously questioning the skill-sets required for high-level aerobatics in either group. The untutored public think that it is all difficult & exciting --- they have it dead right.

For us it's simply a matter of personal preference -- & that's a good thing, otherwise life would be pretty boring.

i keep on hearing this "oh its a 3d plane" what is that mean????? and whats the difference between 3d and flying regular

Well for the most part, regular flying involves folliowing the rules, traffic patterns, flight courtesy towards others etc. 3D basically just throws all of that out the window!

Ain't that the truth...and even worse is when you get 3D Heli's going. Allll over the place!

So, what you some of you guys are saying is; the purpose of our hobby of flying R/C airplanes is to excite the public?

I asked a question, I am not putting anyone down or attempting to insite a riot.

Obviously, I'm in this hobby for much different reasons than some. Other then wanting the public to be O.K. with what I do in R/C, it's unimportant to me if the public is interested or excited by what I do in this sport.

I don't know, but I don't think R/Cers get the "HOT CHICKS"! 99.99% of us will likely never get any types of endorsements for flying R/C and as a matter of fact, most of us pay to endorse our favorite R/C systems, equipment or engines.

Being a good flyer, in and of itself, has to be good enough for me and that's all I'm saying.

I'm mostly interested in scale or sport flying...for some reason 3D has never interested me. I like the analogy of the heli pilots...I know it's dang tough, but for me, it just gets kinda boring.

We don't have many 3D flyers at my club, but last year we had our "big plane" fly in and one 3D dude showed up. He was hovering in front of the pits while a couple guys had huge scale Corsairs in the air. He flipped on a smoke system, totally obscured the other pilots view of their aircraft and nearly caused a crash. I'm not saying that this guy is typical of all 3D pilots, because I've seen boneheads in all facets of our hobby.

I tried 3-D a few years ago, but since we didn't have anybody at our field that flew it I didn't have any help other than what I read here on RCU. So I eventually gave up on it. Since then I have decided that type of flying just isn't for me. Each to their own is out I look at it.

I like to think that saying "3-D" flying is an oxymoron. You know, like "military intelligence". Flying is accomplished by producing lift with the wings, and a stall is when no lift is being produced. 3-D is defined as maneuvers done with the wing stalled. So you are "flying" (producing lift) when the wing is stalled (not producing lift).

Just my 2¢ worth.

Uh Ken -- some of the most brilliant people that I've encountered in the last 45 yrs of working have been military & ex-military people.

Do you know any dummies that fly combat jets?

I would be included in that group. I did 10 years in the US Army, but was put out on a medical discharge when I messed my back up. Sorry, that was just a poor attempt at humor!!!
