Anyone,

I am about ready to buy an electric starter for my Kadet LT-40 with a .46 engine. The LHS has two, one is "heavy duty" and the lady said it was only necessary for .6 or bigger engines.

Is there a problem with using the heavy duty one on a .46. I'm tired of outgrowing everything and would rather pay the extra $$$ to get the heavy duty one if I might need it in 12 months for a fun flyer etc.

The heavy duty starter is nice because you don't have to go and get another starter when you get a bigger engine. The bad part is that if you flood your engine while you are learning how to tune it, and you use an electric starter, you have a MUCH greater chance of breaking something. It's your call. A funfly wont need the heavy duty one unless it is a big one.

I'm currently starting a .91 4-stroke using a standard starter. No problems.

I recommend a starter with a battery pack mounted directly to it, rather than having the cord hanging out to get caught in the prop.

Hobbico makes a battery pack specificly for this purpose, and it will fit just about any standard or heavy duty starter. (or you can build your own pack... its not hard.)

Check out the Kavan starter before spending your money. It is by far the best of the lot and can be used on all size engines up to at least G23 and is smaller and lighter than all others. An outstanding peice of equipment.
