Default hangar 9 p-51pts FLAP/TRIM question ?????????

hello,

just curious as to how much of a trim change there is when you go from using the flaps in the down position to the up position ? we now have a couple of these flying at the field and i was just wondering what the difference is and what to expect as they progress throught the removing of training aids. thanks in advance.

I've only flown one a couple of time and didn't notice a radical change of pitch trim when the landing gear "brakes" were removed or when the flaps were raised. There was some change but not radical. In fact I took off the other day with the flaps up and didn't even notice it until I decided to see how it flew with the flaps up and found they already were up. The elev had only required a slight retrim from the prior flight and I had assumed that I had bumped it slightly.

I have flown one without the wing aids but not the same plane so I had no reference point.

I will say that the gear brakes seemed to slow the plane speed down more than the flaps which appear to be there more for lift. IMO

The flap change can be done at a safe altitude "just in case" like most first time manuevers should be. Just get in a stable cruise and hit the switch.

Just slow down before deploying the flaps. There will be a momentary "Balloon" effect when you drop them, but after that it's just like flying a slower plane - no trim needed

minn,

thanks, what i was after is when they HAVE been in the down position right from the start and then moving them to the up position, how much of a trim change was needed at that point

The change would be minimal. maybe 2 or 3 clicks up after you raise the flaps. Your turns will get a little wider too. If you have a computer radio, you can have the elevator move with the flaps. I think I had mine set to like 4%. Otherwise, give it a couple clicks down elevator then raise your flaps.
