Howdy Everyone!
I'm nearing completion on an BUSA Eindecker 40. I've got an OS .40 LA engine mounted upside down inside a cowl (see pix). The problem is I don't know which muffler is right for the job. I need some specific suggestions as my only option is ordering over the internet and I MUST be sure it's going to work before I order. All I want is something that fits inside and is a muffler. Pretty easy, huh? I've pondered on inverted, compact, and even homemade, but I'm just not sure what the best option is. Please help!!
Thanks a million!

I've been doing that. I've checked many sites but I'm a little overwhelmed with all that's out there...plus I haven't found anything that's been labeled "Inverted" for the LA. That's my main problem. I was hoping someone would know of something offhand, either a specific muffler or where I could find one. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bryan
{Edit} Just looking at my own pics, how about a tuned pipe running down the bottom? Is there a way to get it attached to the muffler port and still run rather streamlined down the bottom of the fuselage?
Thanks,
Bryan

I dont see one for the 40la even listed on slimline's site.
If they had one, this would be the cats meow... http://www.slimlineproducts.com/onli...rted_pitts.htm
bisson makes one for the .46 but not the .40? might see what the differance is http://www.bissonmufflers.com/en/muf...mageField.y=11

The absolute simplest way to do it would be to install this:
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCA85&P=7
between the engine and the stock muffler.
Not the best looking but it should work and is inexpensive.

Now that's an idea. I didn't know those even existed. I'm gonna stick that one in the Plan B spot for now, still want to see if I can get it to fit under the cowl though!
Any other ideas floating around out there?

I can't tell from your pics if the engine might fit sideways indide the cowl. If it will, consider a pitts style muffler that will exhaust down and back. The muffler for the OS 32 will fit your engine.

The other problem with the 90 degree is that if you have a hard nose landing, breakage looks guaranteed. [:@] Take that into consideration as the end of the pipe will be hanging low.

Jim,
Thanks! That tidbit about the 32 is what I needed! I'll look around to see if there's anything else out there that is made for a 32. The pitts style would be ideal.
Keep the ideas coming!
Thanks,
Bryan

Also keep in mind that inverted two strokes are not the best idea. Some people get away with it, but some have problems until the give up all together and go with a horizontal mount.

Ya, definitely don't be trying to run a 2 stroke inverted. The engines just don't like it and most will quit after a few minutes of running.
They don't mind running side ways with a pitts muffler.[8D]

Well, I guess that answers that question! Thanks for clueing in the newbie!! [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]
I'll change it to sideways....2 questions I have now. A 4 stroke same size...more power or the same as a 2 stroke? And, do I need to change the mounting holes for going sideways, or leave centered as is?? (My gut says leave it centered since I pretty sure that lines up with the motor shaft).
Thanks!

4 strokes usually need to be bigger than 2 strokes to get equiv power but it's getting better.
Example: 2 stroke 60 = 4 stroke 90 approx
This also varies upon brand and model of both engines and is definitely a fixed ratio. Saito, Enya, Magnum, OS, YS all have different efficiency engines in different sizes of engines.
Mounting holes? Depends on the mounts you have. Important thing is to have the shaft end up in the same place when done. Not all mounts have a "square" mtg pattern. May be rectangular or even trapazoidal.

To get good performance for a 40/46 size 2 stroke engine you should be looking at 4 strokes in the 72 size. The mounting will be different with the 4 strokes and the throttle cable will also need to be in a different position because the carbs are in a different position on the engine on the 4 strokes. Great info! My 2 stroke has a square mount and after looking at it again, I wouldn't have to move the holes. However, there is not enough space under the cowl for it to be sideways or right-side-up. I guess I'll make the change to a 4 stroke, and I'm going to go a little bigger since I'm flying at very high altitude too (about a .90 or so). Anyone interested in an excellent condition used OS .40 LA?
I'll probably put that in the classified's area soon. After all, that's where I got it!!! [8D]
Thanks for all the help!
