Somehow I don't think that releasing the sticks on the controller for an RC plane is going to have the same effect.
I didn't read anybody say that it would. And I doubt that Mike would insist that you stop. But you really ought to do what your RC flight instructor suggests when you're flying. If you're on the ground, ask what the reasoning is.
BTW, I've yet to see any instructors acting like DI's or shouting commands that must be obeyed. And haven't read that level of heat in anything up until now.

I hope this doesn't come out sounding like I know what I'm doing, because I don't. I can remember when I was learning how to fly ... full scale planes, when my instructor would tell me to do this or do that a specific way. Not doing it that way might cause me to develop a "bad habit" and could eventually lead to me crashing the airplane and killing myself. I paid close attention.
Somehow I don't think that releasing the sticks on the controller for an RC plane is going to have the same effect. I must say MikeEast that if my instructor told me that letting go of the sticks would cause undo wear on my gimbles, I'd thank him for the advice, try my best to stop doing it and keep flying. If he then "insisted" that I stopped. I'd look for another instructor.
Unless those bad habits lead to an unsafe situation for myself or others, lets not get insistant about changing them. Tell me about what I'm doing wrong, suggest ways to stop, but don't stop my learning progress or my ability to fly. Doing so will be the quickest way possible to discourage someone from progressing in our hobby. We're here to learn how to fly RC and I want to have fun doing it. I can only assume that others feel the same way. Please don't put undo restrictions on people trying to learn just because they do something that bugs you.

Now that you mention it,,,, it is "unsafe". I have intentionally and accidentally taken my thumbs off of the sticks more than once during my flying time and sometimes I immediately find the sticks. There have been a couple of times that I have not been able to "find" the sticks for what seemed like an eternity which is a very unnerving feeling to say the least. I did find them, but if you were to lose them the outcome could be at minimum unfortunate and worst case catastrophic.
Respectfully, if you are flying at our field and I am teaching you to fly and you "refuse" to follow my instruction willfully,,, I will beat you to the punch and suggest you find another instructor before you get the plane down. I am there to humbly help you and am donating my time and experience at your request,,, I am a really nice guy and never pushy with my trainees, but I do know what I am doing. Most guys WANT to do what their instructor says, or they would not need instruction. Now, once you are flying and figuring things out for yourself, its a free country so you can do what you want within the law I suppose.....
I have learned a lot from some of the guys who I have taught and I am always open to suggestion as long as you can back it up I am not proud. I just want to be safe and do my best. Its not a spitting contest or abuot control. Its about helping a person to be the best that I can help them to be,,, and the safest.this is a stupid discussion and I cant believe I bit......

Hopefully the thread will go back in the right direction
....
Makes me think about what my instructor told me on my second flt..
My instructor once told me to quit "jacking off those sticks".. He said it was bad
to get into that habit, once released you have no control which equals you being
on the verge of being unsafe among other things... Quit doing that.......

Sorry, didn't mean to get anybody's panties in a wad. I'm sure you are a nice guy Mike. Your students are obviously very greatful that you're willing to devote your time to teach them to fly. I never meant to insinuate anything different. [sm=wink_smile.gif]
Some people in our hobby refuse to even consider getting any sort of formal training. They buy a simulator and a RTF Park Flyer and go off to learn on their own. There are lots of reasons for that, of course. One of them could, maybe, perhaps, possibly be because some instructors insist that their students "follow my instruction willfully" and may have forgotten to make the learning process an enjoyable and fun filled experience.
Of course this is a stupid discussion, beause there isn't an instructor out there who doesn't do all he can to make the learning process just as enjoyable and funfilled as he can ... at least I don't know of any. Then again ... there have been a lot of Park Flyers sold over the years. [sm=72_72.gif]
