Hitman, I would think a good 35 would fly an Avistar fine but to my notion it is not a trainer like a big slow flatbottom wing plane would be. I've had a couple and a strong forty will really make it move. My favorite was one with an OSFX46. Fine all around plane.
The OSFSR engines I've had were top of the line with plenty of power for their size. A 35 FSR shouldn't have any problem flying a plane meant for a bushing 40 like the LA series.

Fred,
Yeah im using a .40 LA in it now...it really moves fast. Its just more to the point of it bolting in and fitting nicely on the mounts. Shouldnt have a problem I dont think, as the mounts for the Avistar are kinda universal.
Thanks fred.

Agree With fredscz BUT...... The 35 Will Not Fly Many Other Planes.I f You Plane to Stay In The Planes The A 35 Will Fly To Your Satisfaction Then You Will Be O.K.I feel The Trainer Will Be Under Powered. You May Not Have The Throttle To Save It If Needed.
The 46 SIze engine WIll Fly A Far greater Selection Of Planes. When Your Skills Improve You Will Be Looking For More Power. So Get The 46 Because If You Plane To Stay In The Hobby You Will Problem Buy It Any Way And A 6 CH Computer Radio Too.Good Luck And Have Fun.

Hitman,
The .35 FSR will be more powerful than your .40 LA. It will also be heavier. Hobbico sells the Select with the LA because then the plane balances perfectly!!!!!
You said it is fast. Take off the 10X6 prop and put on an 11X4. The plane will fly slower, but have improved vertical and will take off sooner.
Someone mentioned having power available when you need it. The use of an 11X4 will give you that with the LA (and with the FSR, but you will be nose-heavy).

hitman45... If the 35 FSR is more powerful than a .40 LA.. It should be good... I
started with the .46 LA Which had very good power, But I really liked it when I put
the 46 FX in my Avistar....

Yeah using a 10x6 prop on it now, i will consider changing the prop and see how it goes. Anyways, was only looking at the .35's and not thinking of buying until I get recommendations. Will most probably go for an .40 FSR or .46
Thanks guys!

I had a avastar select with a 40 LA . I put a 12-4 prop on her and would hover her... lol. Avastar select is a good plane. I have had 4 of them in the last 4 years. Will fly best with a supertiger 51...... 10-9 prop with alot of rubber bands....I just don't see buying a 35 size engine for a 40 size plane. I have a funtana 40 with a 120. If I had a .35 engine I would put it on a 20 size plane. If a plane is to fast. pull back on the stick. Most new pilots fly wide open. Have a good day.....
