Stephen, That's the most common setup here in the States, I don't know about you guys who always fly inverted.

The 2 most common setups are Mode 1 and Mode 2 (see attached diagrams. I've also included a diagram showing Modes 3 & 4 as reference.). In the US most people will use Mode 2, but in other parts of the world Mode 1 is more common. A lot of your setup will depend on the radio, and where the throttle control is located. If it's on the right use Mode 1, and if it's on the left use Mode 2. Another huge determining factor is going to be your instructor and what they fly. The best advice I can recommend is find and instructor and ask them to help you get your radio setup.

Hope this helps

Ken

G'day Mate,
Welcome to a great sport/ Hobby. Here in Aus, we mainly use Mode 1 ie. right stick- Ailerons, left & right, & throttle, up & down. The left stick is Elevator, up & down, & rudder, left & right.
BUT, please save yourself & lot of money/ frustration, & get help from an instructor at a club field, you can learn to fly with an instructor for free, & they will help you set up your plane & get it in the air & trimmed for flight & I know that if you try to do it all by yourself, If you are lucky, you might last 30 seconds, before the CRASH. I'm sure there are clubs in or around Perth, I'm an MAAA certified instructor myself, but I'm on the opposite side of Australia, so I can't help you personally,& when you have joined the club, you are covered by insurance, in case anything happens & your plane hits a car or whatever.
So the best of luck Steve, Enjoy I know we all do over here in NSW.
