Im new to mounting an engine inverted. ( I should say using an engine that mounted inverted). Its a OS 40 two stroke. Do I need to do anything differently? I mean will it start inverted? I suppose filling with fuel would be okay right side up. thing is the tubing is difficult to get to when the plane is on its wheels. Please fill me in. thanks

You will have to lower the fuel tank so the pick up is not above the carb. and make sure you don't flood the engine doing so can cause a hydraulic lock and damage the engine if using an electric starter.

Some inverted engine users start their engine with the plane inverted so the engine is upright, I have never done i that way.

My engines start as well inverted as upright but they are all very well broken in (I think every engine I have has more than 5 gal. of fuel through them).

There's really nothing to it, although an inverted engine can flood a little easier. Other than that, connect the glow igniter, and crank it up!

Like bingo said, line up the fuel tank right, gas her up and go fly.

Just curious.. but why would you want to mount it inverted. Do certain kits require an engine be mounted like this? Or is it a personal preference?

To make life easier on my HOB .20 P-51, I installed an on-board glow driver. That way I don't have to try and get the glow starter on the thing while holding the plane upside down.

Mounting an engine inverted inside a cowl makes the cut out for the head less visible and more pleasing to the eye. some Kits require it to maintain "scale" lines on the plane. Imagine a P-51 with the motor sticking up almost as high as the canopy

It also lets the engine head act as a very expensive skid in the event of a nose-over

Just going to ask my question here instead of bringing back my old thread. On a 4* .40 would you mount the engine upright, side mounted, inverted?

The plans should be very clear on that particular plane

Apart from looking more scale like with certain models it lets you raise the thrust line without having most of the engine sticking out the top.
