Its a building panel that is used in home construction, its used to sheet the outside of homes. Its usually brown in color and comes in 4' x 8' sheets, its like compressed fibers. Holds pins real well.

In my neck of the woods homasote is a grey papery panel that is used on interiors only. I use it as a building surface. I think it may be more difficult to get pins into than the material rc_sport has described. You can cut on it without it falling apart though.
I am getting a little tired of fighting the pins. I think I'll give the building board rc_pilot has described a try.
