Default Newb, help me out

ok so I am gettign into flying rc planes, I don't have one or anything, I would just like to get info first on what to get first, electric or gas, or whatever, and anything else I need to know, maybe some different airplane ideas? I am going to school for commercial pilot, and will start out being a flight instructor. I think it would be awsome to fly a RC plane around. I dont want one that is like 5 feet wide though, I live in a small studio apartment right now, and can't really house it that big, maybe anything under 5 feet I could use. Any ideas and help for me guys? thanks, everything is much appreciated. I look forward to being part of these forums.

Welcome! Probably the best thing to do is locate a club near you and see what they are flying. However, given the time of year and your lcoation, there might not be much flying going on right now. There are TONS of good trainer options out there. RCKen has taken the time to put together a comprehensive list in [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4537845/tm.htm]this[/link] thread. Check it out and find something that fits your budget and available space.

Hope this helps,

Erik

alright I'll check it out. I've honestly never even heard of people flying planes around here, or seen it, although it must go on. Well my grandpa had a pretty big one he built, but I never saw it take off. Should I just be looking at electric planes for now or what do you think?

Well, we know you're broke because learning to fly isn't cheap. Been there-done that, as they say. The nice thing about a 5 ft wing is that it comes off easily for transport and storage on most trainer planes. And a trainer is just what you need, just like you started out, most likely, in a C-152 and moved up from there.
This
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...=LXCXF4**&P=ML
is a reasonably priced COMPLETE trainer that is RTF (Ready To Fly) which means fully assembled and all is there except for field equipment such as fuel and starter batteries and the like.
This isn't a cheap hobby but it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg either. I recommend a Nitro fueled plane over electric because you will be able to fly on more days because they are less susceptable to the wind.
You would also need to find an instructor to increase your chances of success. www.modelaircraft.org has a list of charter clubs or you can ask around your local hobby shop.
Trust me that even a full scale pilot will be wise to have an RC instructor. It IS different. Your theory of flight and such will help but other parts will actually hinder. There is absolutely no "seat of the pants" here.
Good luck and ask more questions.

Here's a club list for Wisconson. See if you can find one near you in it. Otherwise check with the hobby shops.

The Hanger 9 Alpha is a good plane to start out but thats just my opinion. Most planes have big wingspans but most of the wings come off for transport. Even if you have a small apartment you can hang them from the wall or the celling. So its not that bad for storage. Electrics are all right but i would get a glow fueled plane. They sound better and looks better IMO

Good luck and make sure you get an instructor!!

P.s. Good luck on your pilots licenses. I would love to do that someday. But I am 14 and have no money so that will be out of the picture for a while!

oh yea another thing, are there any good ones, or at least decent ones like under 200 dollars? I mean, eventually I'll dive into it and get a more expensive one. I don't want crap, I am willing to spend some money on it, I mean nothing like 35 bucks or nothing, but noting that is like 250 or nothing, you know? thanks for all your replies again, there are alot of great people in here, and lots of help.

Flow? Did you mean Glow? Glow refers to the fact that the engine has a glow plug for ignition rather than a spark plug or an electric motor. Glow plugs are used in motors fueled with a mixture of Methanol, NitroMethane and Oil in various percentage ratios plus a few other additives. 10-15% nitro and @ 18% oil is typical these days. There are motors that run on gas but they are out of your price range for now.

Speaking of price range. It's gonna be tough getting much worth owning below $200 IMO. As I explained before, this isn't a cheap hobby but it can be reasonable. You could get a cheaper electric but I just don't think that YOU would be happy with it very long.
Take a look through the list Just Eric posted above and see if you can find something. Please stay away from EBAY. Newbies go there every day and get SCREWED big time with junk.

If I were you I would wait a while and maybe save your money to get something good not just get it because it's cheap. I just started flying in the summer and I think it cost me $400 to get started. That was not just the plane, it was also fuel, fuel pump, ect all the things you need to fly. You might check you local hobby shop for used planes or packaged deals for the plane and the things you need. If you do buy a used one make sure you ask questions and look at it before you buy it. Never know what could of happened to it before you bought it!!

Were those COMPLETE ready to fly planes? Can you give an example or 2 of these. I can show you planes that cheap. No motor or radios though. Or some flimsy electric toys that you will lose interest in quickly if they fly at all. Provide links if you can to your examples.
