Okay, here’s a question for inquiring minds that want to know. I have a 6 channel radio for my MT P-51 (to be completed) with flaps and retracts, meaning no open channels.

Why couldn’t I use my flaps at full-down to actuate an on/off switch for the remote glow? Yeah, it will take some engineering, but that’s what we all love, RIGHT!?!?!

When the flaps are anywhere except full-down, the power would be off and when the flaps are full-down the power to the glow would be on. SO, I power up the Tx and Rx, move the flaps to full-down via dial, fire up the engine and trim the flaps to level.

One big benefit, you would be applying Glow Power to the engine on landing (assuming full flaps), which MIGHT help in flame outs.

Thoughts….ideas….

dont see any reason why not. the other option is slave it to the throttle. throttle low glow on... this might cause issues for starting as some engines need a touch of throttle to kick over but you can probably make a descrete manual switch somewere on the plane if that is the case.

You could use the flap control as you describe, however if you want an engineering solution you could use a micro switch activated by the throttle servo so that your glo was independent of other functions.

Why don't you just buy a glow driver designed to come on at a predescribed throttlr setting? I just ordered the Nelson glow driver that meters the glow element resistance so it will come on at any throttle setting when needed.

And did you get the "INTELLIGENT GLOWDRIVER DEVICE "
that is listed on the Nelsonhobby.com page at $49.00..
Are you running it off the RX battery, or give it its own battery..
Oh,, and what motor did you put it on ..

Hey Robby, Yes its the intelligent glow driver that will run on it's own battery. I am installing it on a OS160 twin. I ordered it from my LHS.

I agree with unstable. I would slave it to the throttle for you to help flameouts at low throttle settings w/ no flaps (taxiing). With a little tinkering and a 3 way switch, you can have an off, on, and "throttle" setting. I actually made one of these a few years back to go in my GP ultimate so I didn't have to chew up the cowl. It worked great, but I scrapped it in favor of less weight. It can be done though either way though. Good luck.

I use "OptoGLoII" from http://www.cliftech.com you can purchase the kit which you just need to drill the holes and install the components. Only $25. You will need a batt harness and a glow driver harness and a servo harness. It is an optically Isolated rc switch so there is no cuurent draw from your battery to power the glow plug. You can order a completely assembled on for $35 from Electronic Model System. http://www.emsjomar.com/highly recommend the one you build yourself. You get to see exactly how the circuit works. You can set it to go on at the low end of the signal or the high end. I have mine set up to go on @0 throttle and go off after 1/3rd throttle to help prevent dead sticks with my inverted engine, I can reverse that if I need to reverse the channel for other reasons.
