Thanks, Ralf

Just a suplement to Ken's comment. It is possible for a two stroke motor to start backwards since there is no valve train. This seems to happen more on cold days. It is not easy to see if this has occurred, but if you stand behind the motor and don't feel air blowing at you shut it down and try again.

When hand-starting, a couple of my two-strokes will regularly start backwards. I'm one of those ludites who starts by flipping through the compression, rather than against it. Usually with a blip or two of the throttle one of them will flip around, but the other generally requires me to shut it down. There's nothing unusual about a two-stroke starting up backwards.
If you're using a starter, however, that should never happen.
