I did have an instructor, but I am not sure if he was AMA certified. and the local club and he do not get along very well.
AMA Certified does not mean a thing. How many millions of idiots have a "drivers or pilots license?" You had an engine that was not tuned properly and a plane that was not checked out very well. I suggest when you get your next plane, get a different instructor.

AMA Certified Instructor? Anyone out there ever seen such an animal? They don't exist. I mean I want to see photocopies of the certificate.

I suggest to get rid of the nextstar, it is difficult to fly, too jumpy. I had one and broke it into a zillion pieces, instead buy a Kadet it is the best trainer around, bigger and more stable without crappy stuff that its supposed to make it fly better and does not work. You wont regret it.
