Might there be a website or other method of learning all the hardware lingo.....a 2-56x3/8" screw.......a 6-32x1/4 SHCS.....#4 lockwasher......a #6 washer, and so on, and so on. There has to be an easier way to learn hardware specifics....

The # denotes the diameter. You should be able to find them at your local hardware store. If you really, really want the info behind the numbers, here's a page that has lots of details: http://www.engineersedge.com/screw_threads_chart.htm . I'm sure there are others, this is just the first one I looked at.

Local hardware store can help you out. These probably won't be in the big bins but in the smaller trays located in the hardware department.
Hope this helps.

ok, lets try it this way, when the plans call for a specific fastener to say bolt on wheel pants, they might call out 3 or 4 different size screws, washers, splitwashers, etc. If I am looking at this bag of goodies, how do I learn which ones are which, other than trial and error?

www.microfasteners.com
www.rtlfasteners.com
are 2 fine suppliers of modeling hardware
BTW - a #6 washer is a washer of such a size that it fits on a #6 screw such as a 6-32x8SHCS. This is a #6 screw(diameter) with 32 threads per inch. In American (SAE) hardware the length is usually stipulated in sixteenths of an inch so this one would be 1/2" long. SHCS is the screw type or head style and may include the material.
SHCS = Socket Head Cap Screw

Look at Lowe's or Home Depot for a screw sizer/checker. You can also get the proper diameter rods and label them so you'll have gauges to check with.
