Default Futaba radio problem...

Ok Maybe its just me but...
I purchased Futaba 6ex at my local hobby shop. I wanted a channel 59(cause i have 2 other planes on that channel) he didn't have any in 59 but got out a 60 and in turn swaped out the channel 60 RX + TX crystals and replaced them with ch.59s IS This ok to do or is this a bad idea...been out flying a few time but it seem im getting a few hits. IE..plane jumps once in a great while but also could b interference from smoke pump...should i swap the tx back to 60 and buy 3 60 rx crystals??? HELP ANYONE????

The person at your hobby shop was dead wrong for doing that. It is illegal to change the crystals in the transmitter without retuning the transmission circuit. This means that only an authorized service center can change the crystals in a transmitter. The LHS or the end user is not authorized to to make these changes. At the very least you could find that the output on your transmitter is comprimised and you could lose control of your plane and crash. At the worst the FCC could find out that this happened and you could be fined $10,000 for making an unauthorized change.

If you want my opinion I would go back to the LHS and demand that he replace the ENTIRE radio, not just swap it back. That radio has been tampered with and should not have been sold to you in that condition. You need to let him know what he did was illegal and that he needs to provide you with a new untampered radio.

How do I change the frequency of my transmitter?
For a unit with crystals: We CANNOT recommend changing crystals to a different frequency. Changing the crystal on your transmitter is illegal unless you have the proper license. The FCC has established guidelines for the modeler's safety and for the safety of spectators. For safety and FCC reasons we must request that both TX and RX be sent to the service center to ensure proper crystal change and retuning to the new frequency. Crystal based radios cannot be converted to another band without parts replacement, and may not be able to be converted at all. Certain radios can be converted, for example, from 72 to 75MHz. Please contact the service center for any other conversions.

determining modules which are changed by the user must be certificated
with the modules. Each module must contain all of the frequency
determining circuitry including the oscillator. Plug-in crystals are not
considered modules and must not be accessible to the user.

Sec. 95.221 (R/C Rule 21) How do I have my R/C transmitter serviced?
(a) You may adjust an antenna to your R/C transmitter and you may make radio checks. (A radio check means a one-way transmission for a short time in order to test the transmitter.)
(b) You are responsible for the proper operation of the station at all times and are expected to provide for observations, servicing and maintenance as often as may be necessary to ensure proper operation. Each internal repair and each internal adjustment to an FCC certificated R/C transmitter (see R/C Rule 9) must be made in accord with the Technical Regulations (see subpart E). The internal repairs or internal adjustments should be performed by or under the immediate supervision and responsibility of a person certified as technically qualified to perform transmitter maintenance and repair duties in the private land mobile services and fixed services by an organization or committee representative of users in those services.
(c) Except as provided in paragraph
(d) of this section, each internal repair and each internal adjustment of an R/C transmitter in which signals are transmitted must be made using a nonradiating (``dummy'') antenna. (d) Brief test signals (signals not longer than one minute during any five minute period) using a radiating antenna may be transmitted in order to:
(1) Adjust a transmitter to an antenna;
(2) Detect or measure radiation of energy other than the intended signal; or
(3) Tune a receiver to your R/C transmitter.

I hate to say it but Ken is right. If you can do it, print off what Ken has said and present it the the LHS guy. Trust me that he'll probably tell you that he's "been doing this for years". Well, that doesn't make it safe or legal. If your plane had crashed you would have actually had grounds to make him pay for it all.

Also, it probably voided the warranty.

Not disagreeing with what has been said here as it is illegal and more importantly unsafe to do as your LHS owner has done... but have you checked any of your other planes for similar performance problems? I would not recomend flying them but if you still have the old transmitter do an engine running range check on one of your previously "OK" planes and compare the two transmitters. Please report back to us if there is an apreciable range loss as this will further the validity of properly getting a transmitter retuned by a licenced technician.
