I'd recommend doing a "check flight" or two with the buddy cord, then a couple of flights without the buddy box, but with the instructor standing at your shoulder to give "moral support."

Better to have the safety factor and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I agree, why risk it, have an instructor hook up with you and do a few flights until you feel you've got it mastered.
