Default Damn - Too many choices

So i recently ordered a GP Super Sportster with OS 46 AX as my 2nd plane. It is following an Electristar which is a tad underpowered so I was going to get an Avistar as an in-between plane becasue i didnt know if i could handle the speed of the sportster yet. Ok....well now Ive seen the Hanger 9 PTS P-51 Mustang. Now Im all confused as to what I want to do and get next. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Help me! Please....the addiction is killing me.

Any Suggestions? The only thing that is turning me off: I read alot of talk about the landing gear on the Super Sportster not being that great. Alot of tip overs and the wheel pants getting destroyed or gear bending back and wheel pants piercing the wing's covering.

Someone just tell me what to do...its easier that way.

I already voted for the Avistar...

I haven't heard anything bad about the Super Sportster .40 ARF before, but if the wheel pants concern you then simply skip installing them. You can certainly upgrade the landing gear wire easily enough as well.

The Mustang P-51 PTS is a pretty nice sport plane. The ARF version without all of the training accessories on it would be a pretty good value, too.

You don't have any bad choices here, buy the one you like the best.

Yeah, I've seen several of the RTFs with the trainer equipment attached as well as the ARF version set up as a sport plane. I think it works better as a first low-winger than it does as a primary trainer. The build quality is good, the finish is very nice, and it comes with quality hardware.

There have been several reputable reports that the P-51 PTS landing gear blocks are weak and rip right out on a less than perfect landing. (reported by Minnflyer here on RCU I beleive) I am beginning to beleive that all Hanger 9 ARFs have this afliction as I have had and seen several come apart. Now to be fair I will say most of my ARFs are hanger 9. I have had several [link=http://www.airborne-models.com/Index.asp]World Models[/link] planes and I think they are superiorly built but their covering is horible.

So now I have given you even more choices and further complicated your life

Let me throw in another one for you.

My second plane (the one after my NexSTAR) was a Tiger 60 ARF. It is a very forgiving low-wing yet very stable, capable, and very visible up there. Flys just great, and is easy to fly and land, and will do most, if not all aerobatics (note I did not say 3D). I still have it and fly it several times a year. I bought it about 3 months after I solo'ed. I had more problems with engines than I did with the plane (usual new pilot hanger and field rashes but none were in any way catastrophic). Mine now has a Super Tigre 75 with a tuned pipe and is both doscile yet very capable with the power of the 75 tuned pipe setup.

DS.

Nope, sorry Stang but I've had no problems with the gear on my PTS.

But I have a suggestion...

Get your Super Sportster ready. Before you fly it, adjust the aileron linkages (Like about 3 - 4 turnes of the clevises) so you have a very slight droop in BOTH ailerons.

They will provide more lift and allow you to fly slower

The PTS landing gear blocks are a breeze to re-inforce ( and they should be! ).

Once you remove the training aids and change the prop out to an APC 11x6 the PTS P-51D will hold it's own boring holes in the sky with all others.

The nicest thing about it, is that you will not tire of the plane, since it tends to grow with you.

Even though I have many planes now, I have yet another brand new PTS P-51 sitting in it's box awaiting final assembly.

Thanks for the tip on the droop of the ailerons. How much droop should be given. I want to make sure to measure it out right. Thanks again.

I was going to get the Avistar just prior to flying my super sportster...but decided to just make the jump. Wish me Luck....and thanks to everyone for taking the time to answer my questions.

The stang is nice though...i might just have to get it anyway.

Check the long PTS P-51D thread.

It's all detailed there.

Remember there are a lot of changes and suggested modifications there.

Not all of them are required, though a few are recommeded.
