Default First Plane Help

Hello,

I am new to RCU as well as the RC plane world as a whole. The name is Blaine and I am just looking for a plane to start with. I found the plane from Hobby Lobby called the Wing Dragon. It seems like a nice plane by the video provided, but I thought I should ask around before investing into a plane. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Blaine

Welcome to the community Blaine!!! You'll definitely find lots of useful resources and people here.

The most common suggestions I see for first time planes is the Alpha Trainer from Hangar 9 and the LT-40 from Sig. However, don't buy it yet.

The best suggestion is to look up the closest club to you on the AMA website. Check out the club, talk to the instructors/club members, etc. Most clubs have training programs they run to teach people how to fly. This is the route you should definitely take (unless you're willing to waste a lot of money crashing planes over and over). The trainers at the club will also be able to give you some really good and sound advice on what a good plane for you to get is.

I can't stress this enough: USE AN INSTRUCTOR. This will make the process a lot easier and less frustrating for you in the long run. This can be an expensive enough hobby as it is, no reason to make it any more difficult.

If you're wanting a slower plane to just fly around your local park, there are other suggestions we can give you of course. But #1, check out your local club and chat with an instructor.

Jason,

Thanks for the insight. I actually typed that post and then found a local AMA field. I contacted a member and I am going out tomorrow night to see what it is all about and get some insight on my first plane and possibly fly a little bit. I appreciate your help.

Good approach Blaine. Once you have seen a few planes actually flying and talked to a few pilots you will be better equipped to make a decision. I wish more people would make this step prior to buying.

Good luck and have fun.

Jolson-great post. My two cents are always the same on trainers: SIG Kadet LT40 for glow or Sig EP42 Electric and use an Instructor.
