Default Using an infrared temperature gauge

Hi. Anyone ever use an infrared temperature gauge to check engines or sealing irons?

How well do they work? If so, where can I find the normal operating temperature of engines (specifically a Saito .82).

I supposed you could use it to see what the temperature of your covering iron is. But that would be the only thing I can think of to use it for. The reason you don't find anything about the temperatures of airplane engines is because it's not something that we worry about. With an airplane engine you have a constand airflow over the engine that keeps it from overheating like car engines can.

We use them on the chopper engines all the time but I've never felt the need to point one at an airplane engine.

i use them for working on cars all the time. There has been several threads about the use on checking head temps and most seem to agree there useless. bench temp is going to be way different than flying temp.
