Sky Raider Mach 2 Engine Mount
#2
All those airplanes need a side-mounted engine for best fuel tank alignment. However if you are using it for the Club 40 racing program, then it must be -- by their published rules -- mounted as shown in the kit. That makes it like most trainers, the engine is actually too high relative the tank. Of course a dub-jett bladder tank can help.
Another good mount is to set up for a 120-135 degree mounting and allow the muffler run under the fuse between the gear. I use that in some scale models and such as the 4*40 when we raced those. provides a low carb for better fuel arrangement and doesn't get into the inverted engine unhandy set-up.
That all depends on your engine and muffler arrangement and how much you are willing to modify those front-ends of the model.

Have you ever installed one of these? I have the engine mounted as they said to. That's fine. I checked with another source. Now, the gas tank plug is a problem. The three hose went into the plug. There's a screw to tighten the rubber so it expands, but it appears to me to be WAY too large to fit into the hole . I've have an image.let me know what you tink! Thanks. Dave.

The Sky Raider mounts the engine up-right. There are blind nuts already installed in the firewall for the engine mount which is adjustable for different engine block widths. The cheek on the left side has a hole in it (it's covered but you can feel it) for a rear mounted needle valve. If you have a carb mounted needle valve like the Super Tiger GS-40 I have on mine then you'll need to trim away part of the forward corner of the left hand cheek for clearance.
Most Sky Raiders seem to work fine with the stock tank location since the engines run off muffler pressure. The only real issue I've seen is some times the stock tanks don't work right - I had to replace min as it would not allow inverted flight and was leaking air. After I replaced it the engine has been rock steady.

Mauiavian - I can try and get a picture of my engine and new tank installation tonight if you want to see how I modified my plane.

If you lubricate the stopper it should go in. Be sure the srew is loose so the stopper is not expanded at all.

Do it the easy way and mount it upright. The engine runs fine with the tank in the stock location. Just put one together the other day to get into the Club 40 racing with everything bone stock and its a flawless running, flawless flying plane. No surprises anywhere.
