There is a swap meet coming up. All thought I’m still learning I want to go ahead and get the next stage engine. I know it will be in the 40. to 50. range. The main engine I am looking for is the LA 40 AX. But I don’t want it limited to that specific engine. Also some pros and con will be appreciated.
Thanks

LA 40 AX? I am not familar with that one. OS make a 40LA and a 46AX.
The 46AX is much better than the 40LA. The difference being the 40LA is bushed and uses air bleed on the carb. The 46AX is a bearing engine and has a low end needle valve.
Good deals on these engines would be $30 for the 40LA and $70 for the 46AX NEW. I have seen brand new Thunder Tiger Pro 46 engines at swap meets for $50. If you see one of these deals grab it, they are $90 at the LHS and on par with the OS AX engines.
Unless you know who you are buying from don't buy a used engine at a swap meet.

Unless you can clarify the question you are asking here I don't see any reason to leave this thread open. The question that you have posted makes no sense at all, and all requests to have you clarify what you are asking for have been met with more confusion and jibberish. I really don't want to lock this thread, but unless you can clarify this I don't see that I will have any choice.

There is a swap meet coming up. I am looking for a new engine. My instructor says that the OS 46 AX is the best for my avistar. I want to know if there are any more engines that would be similar to this model engine, and that would perform the best at the lowest cost

You're not going to get an engine that is going to perform better than the 46 AX for a lower cost. There are similar engines that don't cost as much, but IMHO they aren't an OS. Now on the subject of swap meets. Personally, I WILL NOT buy an used engine unless I personally know the person selling it. An engine can be ruined with just one or two lean runs. There will be a lot of engines (not all of course) sold at swap meets will be pretty much used up. There are those that will disagree with me, but I just don't like taking the chance of winding up with a dude of an engine. I would rather just spend the little bit extra and have a brand new engine. That way I know everything about it's history, since it doesn't have one before I acquired it. For beginners in the hobby I strongly advise against buying at swap meets because it's even harder for someone just starting out to spot problems with a used engine than it is for an experienced pilot. Of course the choice is yours to make, but if I were in your place I would just save a little extra money and buy a new engine.
That's my 2¢ worth.

Like Ken says, poo-poo on buying swap meet engines. Most of these guys want top $$$ for JUNK! If you are a serious collector or know exactly what you are looking for and can bargain, that is another game for fun or profit and so go for it.

Now here are some current prices from the tall place in the sky, and some are really good. Check them out.
O.S. 46LA w/Muffler Natural 67.99 The 40s are gone. This engine will fly an avistar very nicely. Your instructor has to know air-bleed carbs (very easy and super dependable once properly set) and the shaft is a bushed bearing, but if you use a good oily fuel you can get 40-60 hours before it throws more fuel out the shaft than it burns.
O.S. 46AX ABL w/Muffler 109.99 They be proud of this one.

Thunder Tiger Pro .40 Ball Bearing ABC w/Muffler 84.99 Great little engine, the darling of the Club 40 racing crowd, due mainly for its superior idle as those racers have to go from a non-held standing start. Not cheap, but a good engine.
Thunder Tiger Pro .46 Ball Bearing ABC w/Muffler 89.99 This will equal the OS 46 in about everything except price.
GMS .40 ABC BB w/Muffler 59.99 Fast powerful engines. Touchy to handle especially at first as they are true ABC which some inexperienced have a problem with the engines as they require a somewhat different approach to operation.
LXDXL5 GMS .47 ABC BB w/Muffler 64.99 same above. Both have tuned mufflers which adds to the touchy operation.
Now my favorites are the Super Tigres 40 ($50) and 45ABC ($65 and an easy ABC). Good prices but 45 is out of stock until next month. If one has the patience and know-how to break that little 40 in, and adjust the carb (really needs a restrictor which I can make) one can enjoy many hours of trouble free flying.
Screw swap shops. Why pay for someone else's mistakes?

I do agree , that a newbie , should not buy from a swap meet. However , the best running engine I have is a Saito .72 , I bought off of E-bay for $85.00 shipped.
I also pick up a Magnum 1.20 4 stroke and a World Models Clipped wing Piper Cub with floats. this weekend at a swap meet. Had to replace an o-ring on the intake manifold of the 1.20 and now it runs great.
Out of my 13 engines , 6 are used , 7 are new , and all run great. And I only buy used ring engines , never ABC , in case they do need attention, I can get by, buying a ring, but have`nt had to yet. Most just need a little TLC to get them running, generally , it`s air leak problems.
I do have one advantage over some people, as I`ve rebuilt engines of every size and application most my life and know what to look for. Like a vendor putting thick oil in the cylinder to raise the compression .
The easiest engine I have had , is a new O.S .46.AX , This is a good engine for a newbie , and is a no brainer. But you pay for it. The cheaper engines are just as good if you break them in right , but take a lot more tuning than the O.S. The cheaper engines , seem to have more power than the O.S once they are tuned right.
I just broke-in a GMS .47 , it took alot of fiddling and tuning to get it right but I was rewarded with a very strong running , high rpm engine for under $50 .
Bottom line, Buyer beware, when it comes to used.
