Try Greased Lightning. It cuts grease and cleans. I dilute it 50% with water.

Now for what I use to clean. I use windshield washer fluid with a little bit of Dawn liquid dishwashing soap in it. I use this because of cost and it works well. For just about a buck I have enough to last for an entire flying season.

Ken,

This is a good idea. With the soap added, does this still yield a clean surface with no fogging from soap residue?

Paper towels actually have a metal fiber mesh in them, so they can actually scrath the surface. I've been flying the real thing for 27 years and one of the first things they teach you is to never use a paper towel on a windshield.

No, it doesn't leave any residue. you don't need a lot of Dawn mixed in. A squirt or two is all you need to add to the washer fluid.

I use Windex mixed 50/50 with rubbing alcohol. cleans much better than windex alone.

Yes, Windex does work. But, their is this one guy in the local club that had some all surface foaming cleaner that worked great ! I don't know if it was a upcoming product that was being tested or it is out in certain stores to buy, but, case in point - it works great and I have no clue when or where it'll be available. (Pretty much all glass cleaners will work but, may have effects on the covering. If you get some under the covering it starts to just peel away ! Or their may be other foaming cleaners out there that I have no clue about.) I just use some generic cleaner and it works fine !

I'm Cheap!,

I just wipe the heavy residue off at the field and when I get home I use hot water and dish washing liquid. It cuts the grease and leaves the plane very clean. Of course you have to use a soft sponge and then rinse the plane off with clean warm water. Then towel dry.

rubbing alcohol in larger bottles from walmart will cut the grease .windex works fine but several years ago while using it to clean planes painted with perfect paint , it softened it considerably. although simple green will work ok id hesitate to use it around engines . its corrosive -one reason its use has been banned on full size aircraft.
