I did a search for test stand in the 'tips & techniques' forum
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/forumid_180/tt.htm
and it returned 4 pages of results. Lots of comments and photos of what people have done.

I've heard only good things about the VMar Engine Test Stand available from Richmond RC:

At $17.95 plus shipping and handling it is quite reasonably priced.

This one was built of 1/2" aluminum mount and oak fuel tank rail.

i used a comercially available engine test mount bolted to a 12mm piece of plywood with a tank held up on a block of wood behind with a rubber band around it. so far ive tested a 52 Surpass, OS MAX .15, OS 46LA, OS 40LA and MDS .40 with no problems (apart from the MDS, but that engine never ran right to start with)
i may be able to get pics tomorrow

I have a stand bolted to the top of a folding sawhorse. The back leg brace of the sawhorse is stuck through a concrete block. No problem with the engine tipping the mount forward into your lap.
