Deltas can be very hot models. Like the full scale ones they require a long takeoff run to become airborne. Rolls, with a lot of throw, are very quick. In turns you have to watch out not to lose too much speed. Landings can be slow with a nose-up attitude.

Yep most are hand launced as they are built for speed and gear adds drag, i like the look of the Rapier but for pure speed and simplicity the Diamond Dust is probably king, theres also a Coro version called the Coro Dust.
goto one of the SPAD forums and ask around for the detailes www.spadtothebone.com

also do they have folding props ? if not how do they land without breaking prop ?
Thanks Stedge

I wouldnt suggest them as a second plane as they may "land like a trainer" for an expierenced pilot, but someone fresh of a trainer will be thinking "which end is up". orientation is going to be hard on one of those so that second that you spend figureing out what way to roll could put it in the ground.
a foam flying wing (like the zagi or ele-bee) is a good plane to learn flying a "wing" I got one after progressing to fun fly and other "expert" planes and even I put it in once due to lost orientation but because its foam it just bounced breaking only the prop and cracking one of the elevons (a little CA and a new prop and it was flying within 5 minutes)
I would move on to a nice sport plane before picking up a speed plane like a delta. you wont be disapointed with a 4 star 40 or a venture 60.
as for landing you kill the engine before you touch down... so your landing aproaches have to be on target every time because every landing is deadstick.

I have a Tharpe Delta Vortex; it isn't too fast or hard to fly, but I think another step up from the trainer would be a good
idea before you tried one. It's a lot different from trainer planes keeping orientation and things can happen fast when you aren't quite ready.

I have test flown both the Enforcer and Force One from Balsa USA. They are pusher prop delta wings. Both flew excellent. However, I can certainly see orientation being a bit of a problem. Also, pusher props can be a pain in the neck with fuel flow problems. I'd keep away from the Diamond Dust. I think it's an awesome plane. But it is not a second airplane. It can be super fast. It is not a simple plane to build either. I like the idea of the 4 Star Forty or Venture 60. Even a Super Sportster 40 or 60.

I have the "Laser Arrow" from Laser Models, with an O.S. .46 on it. Wouldn't recommend it as a second plane, but if you fly it at half throttle or less, it is very docile. Wide open it rolls so fast you can't hardly count them. When I feel the "need for speed" I drag it out and get it out of my system. then I go back to my Sr. Telemaster!
It does fly good, slow or fast, and doesn't have any bad habits. I don't know about the rest of the deltas that are mentioned on this thread, but this one is all laser cut. As far as building, and parts fit, I've never seen anything close to this one. Incredibly well designed and easy to build.

From what I can gather they all seem fairly easy to fly, although fast the one thing i can see from the above and thinking about it my self is the fact due to the shape, speed and size difference to a trainer it's going to be fairly hard just to see which way the baby is going. I'm now thinking thanks to this that i might go for a SPAD my building skills are pretty limited so i might go for a ARTF SPAD kit i know this sounds lazy but once i've made one i kind of get my bearings as i have never seen a SPAD in the flesh let alone built one..... So can anyone reccomend a good SPAD plane to start I think a .40-.46 size would do me niceley !!!!!!!1

stedge2000. i you mean a good trainer SPAD the Debonair or BUHOR are aimed at beginers but people have also learnt on FNS or DPS with dihedral wing.
kcflyboy. there are a couple of SPAD deltas, from the delta PBF's to the corodust and mr greenspeeds new ez pusher delta (not test flown yet), i think most of the deltas have the GC at about 15% MAC.
