I think ive decided to gut my avistar and get a cheap bang-around plane. Im thinking of either the Hanger 9 Twist 40 or the Great Planes U-Can-Do .46. Which would you guys recommend? Will be using a Super Tiger 45 for power. Looking to really play around with 3D. I dont want to use my Showtime as much as its more expensive to fix/replace. Thanks!

The twist is a nice plane but it lacks in the tail moment dept (distance between the trailing edge wing & elevator) the u-can-do has a longer moment which will make hovering more stable & obtainable.
I had a twist .46 with a saito .82 flat spins were great, hovering was tougher to achieve for more than a few seconds at a time. Plus the twist is fragile behind the canopy--oh snap--that's my take on the two.

The UCD will not take a lot of abuse and the 45 is not really enough to get what you want. Something like a 70 fs is where it's at, nothing less. I flew mine with a ST 90 for some time when "Old Age" took her from me.[:@]
Both choices are good.......but the 45 is at the bottom limit for real performance.
My thoughts,
Bruce

I've been around both planes since that were introduced.
They fly enough alike to be considered in the same category but the UCD is much smoother because of the longer tail moment.
The Twist is more durable
The Twist is cheaper
The Twist has an upright open engine which is more convenient and trouble free.
Use large engines in both.
The UCD 40 likes a Saito 100. Fits like they were made for each other
The UCD 60 likes the Saito 125 or OS120AX
The Twist planes like same engines

I can wait on the Twist to be back in stock. I just dont want to buy anymore engines and servos for a while. Since I already have the ST45...I figure the Twist would work. I like the look of the UCD but again, dont want to spend on another engine and the ST45 prob wont be enough.

The ST45 will fly the UCD 40, but without much authority. Go ahead and buy the UCD and mount the ST45 and get a bigger engine later on. The ST45 is a good, strong engine and will work. You might want to consider the Tower Hobbies 75. Great engine and very inexpensive.

I have a Thunder tiger Pro .46 on my twist, and it will fly straight up right out of my hand til i can barely see it, not sure about guys putting huge engines on this plane, how much vertical do you need?, most of my flying is done below 1/2 throttle, i find this plane to hover quite well and the .46 has plenty of power to pull it striaght up out of the hover.

I have no doubt that the Twist will fly well with an ST45. From what Ive heard the UCD 46 wont do so well with same engine. I think I have decided to get the Twist. I like the look of the UCD 46, but not willing to spend anymore money on engines.....for now.
Thanks Guys.

I know I'm late to give my opinion, but the H9 Tribute would be a perfect canidate for your engine. I bought one last year so I'd have some place to stick a wornout OS 40la. That gives it great performance on low rates and phenominal performance on high rate. The UCD is also a great choice, I have one as well and LOVE it. I put the OS 55 on it and in the hands of a good pilot it really shines. I can only make glisten slightly, just need fewer work hours and more daylite time.
