Looks like a regular .40 size high wing trainer plane, but I'm quite new at this, so don't take my word for it. If I'm right it will have a .40 to .46 engine and an approximate 6 ft wingspan. I guess if it's all trimmed for training and runs well, it's quite a bargain at that price, and an ideal first plane. Personally, I always advise my car guys to avoid second hand RC of any kind, you usually end up paying more than if you'd bought new, but sometimes you can get lucky.

It's tough to guage very much from those snapshots, but for $40 it would be pretty hard to go wrong. If the plane is flyable and the engine runs, it's well worth $40. If there are servos installed with a receiver and flight pack battery, then it's even more worth it.
On the other hand, if it's a busted up old airframe with no servos or radio equipment, and there's an old glow engine with rusted out bearings on the nose, you'd be better off keeping your $40 in your wallet.

Although it looks good, I don't believe I'd buy it from those pictures alone. I'd want to see the inside and a closeup of the engine. Some information on what it is, what engine it is, and what radio stuff is included would help, too. Granted, $40 isn't much, but that's the thing that has me concerned that it isn't all it appears to be.

Hmm... Thanks for the insight guys! I think i'll try to get a closer look at it, pictures, etc. However I do agree with you guys -- that it's just an gamble. It could be 100% it could be junk. I contacted the guy but he hasn't gotten back to me just yet.

If it is a Great Planes “PT†series trainer, it is kit built versus ARF. That can be good or bad depending on the builder. Since your post mentioned that it’s local to you, there’s the opportunity to get a good look before any money changes hands.

At that price it could either be completely trashed out, a fantastic deal with somebody needing to get rid of it quickly for some pocket change, or somebody could have gotten it with a five-finger discount and is just trying to make a few bucks for his time/effort. Inspect it very thoroughly and try to find out the history on it, especially and damage/repairs done.

Is it just my eyes or does it appear that the tail is REALLY twisted to starboard in this image.

I don't know -- It may be just an optical illusion in the picture. But I'll know more as soon as the guy gets back to me and I have a look at it. Maybe even get it at $20, He says he knows nothing of it and wants to get rid of it... Who knows.

If you get a chance to eyeballit (that is one word isn't it?[>:])look closely to determine if the tail feathers are true to the fuse and align the middle of the upside down wing front to back visually then without moving notice if the wings have any warp. a little can be fixed say less then an 1/8 " off is ok. pull on the rudder, elevator and ailerons to see if they are on good. the original design of the PT 40 is just fine. the motor should feel SMOOTH all the way through some rotations and have good compresion. Don't mistake gunk in the cylinder for compresion though.

Looks like an LT 40 to me..
