Oh, OH!! problems with Futab 6exap

Not sure what is going on with my TX. Went out to fly and doing a radio check the rudder stick was not working. It caused the rudder to go all the way to the left with no input from the stick. When I move the stick I do not get any rudder movement at all. When I put the servo in another slot it works. Tried a different RX same thing. Bummer. Any ideas what to check- If I need to send it in, where do I send it. Thanks in advance for the help

I know this is a dumb answer but are you sure you are plugging the rudder into the right channel? On Futaba I believe it should be channel 4 if I am not mistaken.

Yes I had it in the right channel--had been flying with it for sometime--put skis on it and was going to fly it that way. This is a problem that developed all of a sudden.

I changed the crystal and then used another tx and it worked fine. Tried the transmitte on another plane--=I have four planes on the one freq. 57 a couple of planes on 48 so I used the 48 tx and it worked.

I have had the same problem with my Futaba 6exh but that was because I had it on heli programming. As far as I know your doesn't have any heli functions but perhaps some form of mixxing got accidentally set.
Before sending it in for service start from scratch and reprogram that model.
If you do have to send it in you can send it to the Futaba service center. I have had good service from them in the past.

Hope you saved your box from it. Sounds like its going to be making a trip to Hobby Services here shortly. The only other thing to check is to make sure nothing in the programming is messed up, but from what you are describing, I think a trip to the repair shop is in order just to be safe.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say a wire came off one end of the control potentiometer circuit, either at the control or at the circuit board. BUT could also be something else. If experienced in electronics you could take a quick look inside, otherwise ship it to Futaba or Radio South depending on warranty status.

I don't think it is still under warranty. Had it a couple of years. Probably just as cheap to buy a new one as opposed to sending this one in. Most of my planes are set on this channel

Hey Bruce---I took the back off and one look told me it was beyond by third grade education. I carefully put it back together. Really torn between sending it in and purchasing a new one. I have a DX-7 but only one RX--the RX's cost as much as a 6exap would be.

does anyone know what the difference between the 6exap which I have and a 6exhp--is the hp for heli's and if it is will it work for my planes.

I'm pretty sure the "h" is for heli's.
In case you're interested.. I have a complete 6EXAP system I could sell you. (TX, RX, Servos, battery, etc.)
Channel 11 (I think). It's used. It was used when I got it. But I got it with the original box and paperwork. The guy I got it from said it wouldn't work for Helis, which is what he wanted to use it for.

Heli versions may have some switches in different locations and there is no ratchet on the throttle lever - smooth. Some like it that way though. Look at the pic/manuals online to see/learn more. H's default to Heli configuration when setting up new plane whereas PLANE versions default to PLANE configuration.

Looks like I can buy a new one 6exah for about 90-100. Do you think the heli version would be ok. Would it be compatable with the 6exap because the other one I have is on channel 48 and We use both for buddy boxes when my grandsons fly. that way we both have the same tx set up the same way.

Your radio has built-in 6 model memory so you can set it up to fly 6 different planes, or 6 different set-ups for one plane if so inclined. When you turn your radio on you have to select which plane you want to fly (if its different from the last one you just flew), so your radio may have been accidentally set for another plane instead of the one your are currently trying to fly. Example - I have 6 different planes that I can fly using one transmitter, in this case a Futaba 7C (My JR 6102 currently is set up for only 2 planes but can have 10 planes programmed into it). . To fly a different plane I have to select that particular model through the menu system on the transmitter, and also select between PPM and PCM (To switch from my School Boy to my King Kobra I have to select the King Kobra, then make sure I switch to PCM.
Check your radio and see what plane you have it set for. I've found it helpful to use the naming function built into the radio to make it easier to identify the specific plane - then all I have to do is remember if the receiver is PPM or PCM [sm=spinnyeyes.gif].

Yes I did that I have a piece of scotch tape on the plane telling me what model it is and if it is set up for D/R. Only the rudder is not working--if I plug the servo (that was for the rudder) in another slot it works. When I put the servo back in the rudder slot (4) then the rudder immediately goes to the far left and moving the rudder stick does not have any effect on it.

Well, it sounds like, if you have the correct model selected on the TX, that the TX itself is bad and either needs to head for the shop or trash (or retirement on the shelf). Since it's two years old, you'll have to consider that you may be looking at batteries in another year or two (I get suspect of batteries on a TX after about 3 years - probably just from the way they used to last 25 - 30 years ago though), so you may want to factor that into making your decision on what to do.
If it was me, I think I'd send it in - Radio South will give you an estimate before repairing it letting you decide if you want to go that route. If you don't then you are only out the shipping - cheap gamble I think.

edit: If you do send it in, you may want to send in the receiver that came with it just to have that checked and tuned while they are at it. It may be worth a call to them and see what they would need for you to send with it.

Yea I might do that. It has a new 2700 battery in it. Only a couple of months old. I'm telling you that it worked one day and the next nothing on the rudder. Tried different RX still the same results.

Heck, knowing now about the battery, send it in. Sounds like something in the electronics fried - and that is a typical example - works fine one minute, doesn't then next time you turn it on. Radio South should be able to fix it pretty quick. Worst case is you'll have to pay postage both ways if it costs too much to fix - like I said, postage is a cheap gamble.
