Default Flew in the snow today

Well I went out to the field today with plans to fly my Four Star on skis. I threw my SPAD Gnat in the car as a backup, and the last thing I put in the car was a snow shovel. It didn't look like anybody had been at the field since it snowed over a week ago. There was about 18" of snow on the ground.

I shoveled a path from the parking area to one of the benches, and cleared an area in front of the bench to work. I'm really glad I brought the shovel. I put my Four Star together, fueled it up, started it, and made sure it was tuned. I set it down on the snow and .....

...it sunk right in. Apparently, the snow was too powdery for the skis. I was mad at myself for not checking this in my yard before coming all the way to the field, doing all that shoveling, and getting the plane all ready to fly.

I put the Four Star aside, and fired up the Gnat. I just stood right in front of the starting bench and gave it a toss into the air. It flew beautifully. I flew two tanks of fuel through it and each flight ended in a nice belly landing in the snow. I had a set of Dubro park flier skis on it, but I took them off because they were flopping around too much. I think I will put some full size Dubro skis on it.

Once again, the day is saved by a SPAD

I'll miss flying off snow (just moved to the south!)

But I've run in to that ,,, skiis work great on a bit of hard pack snow... but floats work great on soft snow...

Glad the day went well... and Gotta love SPAD's!

I got to spend an hour Christmas morning flying off the snow in the field behind my house here in Iowa. I went and put Dubro park flyer skis on one of my foamys with a brushless Ultrafly motor. The field was really solid with a complete sheet of ice under a little fluff. Had about as much fun just zooming around on the ice without even taking off. Those little foamys go like snot on the ice!

Haha yeah it snowed in seattle too so I brought out the new foamy and well, it started to build up in the wings when i went to get extra battery's (there is a large park about 200 ft away from my house.) when i got back I tried to fly but i hadn't realized the snow plus there were.... DOGS EVERYWHERE! Fun but bad times, But we never even need skies here its just a really long pole to get some planes unstuck. I want 18 inches of snow. its never cold enough.

Wife took a promotion.. someone has to keep me in the lifestyle I've grown accustomed!!!
Wife has been here almost three months, my son and I moved down about 2 weeks ago now....
Not sure if I will go back up for Toledo or not....

Ended up in Johns Creek, GA, NE of Atlanta, near Alpharetta and Duluth... Flew foamies in the front yard on Christmas and could still feel my fingers!

Not to change the subject, but there seems to be a lot of opposition to flying those big gassers. Anyone really know why? I really enjoy watching them.
