i just built me a cheap one today for a test....used 7/16 dowel rods....might go to 1/2 inch or larger on the rods but the 7/16 rod will work for now. just drilled holes 7/16 in the 2x4's and shoved the rods in. secured the 2x4's into the drywall with screws and the anchor in 2 places on each 2x4.

pic attached are the anchors that go into the drywall (short screws that came with the anchors weren't long enough) so I bought #8 2 1/2 inch screws

the metal brackets are much more expensive

The most "affordable" solution I found was at Home Depot. Go to the shelving section and get the steel (gray colored) standards with the 16" supports (the ones that look like blades, not the big ones you can park a truck on). Then head down to plumbing and buy a couple strips of pipe insulation.

If you have a lot of planes, you can really cram them in there too. This is just basic utility shelves from walmart. I pack them in two a rack. Insulation for hot water pipes protects the covering. I still run out of room, hence the 272 ratings on the marketplace here.

Or go to home depot and get the 2x4 's there.....

Or if you're a zillionaire just rent a hangar at the local airport.

Keep them in the garage and they might collect moisture. Put them in your bedroom and have the wife sleep out in the garage...

Yeah.. I need to do something myself. I have a downstairs bathroom with a stand-up shower stall.. well, it's no longer a shower stall, it's a 'hanger'. I have to make some room in my storage/work room and get some of the junk out of there and make my room more friendly to my planes. right now, they are not in places that really does not enhance their life span.. that's for sure.

I went from A 1000 sq. ft. shop to A 14X14 shop when I moved. It's an unattached guest house. I have racks built for planes to hang from above and racks for hanging bipes from the walls and like CG I have the bath tub/shower full up too. All my racks were home made like all the photos shown and the parts bought at the local hardware stores.

I used 3/4 inch PVC pipe and made some storage racks that I hung from the rafters in my shop. Low enough to reach but high enough that I do not have to duck down. Seems to work really well with some tees and a 45 degree fitting on end so nothing slips off the rack.

ditto on the pvc. I also wrapped mine with the foam pipe insulation to keep my scratches to a minimum.

Kit,
Thanks for the idea of not putting those shelves on a wall.
I never liked that setup for planes because of the horiz stab.
I have a perfect place to put a similar setup in my garage.
Again, Thanks!

After living with planes on the floor for a year, I finally put up shelves for my planes just Monday night. It's standard wall-mount track shelving from Home Depot covered with pipe insulation as suggested here before, looks great and works well. If you go this route, be sure to get the deepest shelf brackets they have... those tailfeathers are bigger than you think!

Next project: filling the shelves up.

Very cheap, and effective. Just PVC pipe and pipe insulation all from Lowes. Depending on weight of your planes, you can use smaller sizes than I used. Just standard plumbing pipe, and I did not glue them together. Makes it easy to move or re-arrange if you change things later.

If you go to Lowe's, they have some cool garage systems that you can move the hooks around easy and they have different styles of hooks with foam already on them. They are made by Gladiator. I also use the shelf brackets with fome like everyone else. [img][/img]
