Hi all,
a friend of mine is learning to hover his Sig Something Extra with some limited success.
He has been told that he needs a finer pitch prop for this.
His current setup is an OS .46 fx engine with a 11X6 nylon prop.
Any suggestions?
Help would be appreciated.

A Master Airscrew 12X4 is a good choice. The APC12.25x3.75 is another good choice but cust twice as much as the MA. Keep in mind also a Sig SE with a 46 is going to need 75% throttle or more to hover. He is a little underpowered for hovering.

Just a guess but it sounds to me like the wrong set up for hovering. The Somethin Extra isn't really a hovering type plane and the 46 would be marginal with it anyway and an 11x6 prop is more a sport type prop. You need a wide type prop like a 12x4w or at least a 12.25 x 3.75 to start with but I don't recall the Somethin Extras having control surfaces big enough to hover with to begin with.

when hovering or doing 3d you need a low picth prop. or you will have air cavitation which basicly means you are no longer produceing trust no trust no lift no lift no plane. the 46 would be hard to find the correct prop your best bet is the APC 12.25x3.75 (which still inst great for 3d). with a 60 sized moter you could do it with a apc 12x4w(w=wide). with that setup i thinkin you will be 3/4 throttle to hover

We have had quite a few Somethin Extras at my field, and I was given one by a guy who was tired of repairing it. They do hover okay with the .46FX and an APC 12.25x3.75 prop. If that one is built stock, it may have barely enough power to pull out with authority, but it should do it. One cheap way to get more power on that engine is to get the Towers muffler. That should give you a good bit more RPM. I have an Evolution .46NT on mine, and it pulls out fine. It also has the Towers muffler.

I can hover other planes fine, but i have a hard time with my SSE. I can put it there sometimes, but it tends to fall out or flop pretty easily without an easy recovery. it does harrier pretty well, but if not at just the right AOA, it wing rocks like crazy. like mentioned above, it is not a great 3d plane. there is not enough rudder authority for it to be real good at that stuff. fwiw mine has a .55AX with a 12X6 on it. the .55 seems to like that prop a lot. my buddy has one with a 13X4W on his with an OS .50. he told me yesterday that he liked how mine flies better.

But overall it is true, I do like the way his flies better.

Thanks for the help!
I guess the engine and plane combo aren't ideal but he is just experimenting.
I will advise him on the 12X4 prop, and don't know if we will be able to get something like the 12.25X3.75 here in South Africa but I will check.
Did any of you see that Avistar hovering on the uTube video?
