Default My first attempt @ building an ARF...

Hey guys I have been flying for about 4 months now. I purchased a ThunderTiger Lazy P-51 with a ThunderTiger .40 on it from my buddy who taught me to fly... Well I got a ModelTech Magic Version 2.0 for Christmas. So here are the pics of my first build attempt...

Started off epoxying the wing halves together...

Then installed the aileron servo's and CA'ed the Aileron's in...

Test fitting the wing to the fuselage...

epoxying on the Stab...

Then epoxy in the vertical stab and CA'd the Elevator on...

Rudder CA'd and control horns installed...

Starting on Servo instal in the fuselage...

Engine mounting...

Control linkages connected...

Battery, Fuel tank, reciever installed...

Landing gear attached...

Completed and at the field...

First flight!!!

Landed safely!!!

It flew great!!! Although I didn't get to aerobatic the first flight as it was very windy and I am still pretty new to flying... I am really excited to get up on a calm day and see what she can really do!!!

Looks like you did a great job on it. I bet your next flight will be even. Good luck.

Thanks for the kind words. Most of the credit goes to my friend and instructor Patrick(thats his Extra 300 behind my Magic on the build table) who really got me started in this hobby/obssesion!!! He definatley made the building process fun and made it seem pretty easy!!! I really can't thank him enough for his help!!! Anyway total build time on this was about 16 hours consisting of 4 evenings... It was a lot of fun and I am already trying to decide on what I want to build next!!!

A calm day.....in Texas..... hmmm. About July 1 - 10 might get you there!

Nice job on your Magic. I'm guessing that after you get comfortable with it, it will become your favorite windy day plane. The thick wing designs are really fun in the wind; hovering on the wing, flying backward, etc. Enjoy!

I am sure you are correct in that Jim!!! A Magic is my buddy/instructor Patrick's goto plane for windy days!!! They are pretty amazing!!!

Josh

P.S. Where do you fly Jim??? I have flown a couple times @ Texas Wings but mostly at Thunderbird Field at Lake Benbrook...

I can't believe no one has said it yet.
You don't build an ARF you assemble it.
Nice job, looks like a fun airplane.

I fly with the 114th in Grapevine and at Greater Southwest. I have flown at Thunderbirds field several times at special events, like warbirds, etc. but it's a bit far for me for regular flying. It is a nice facility.

How hard do you guys think something like this would be for a first time builder?

Josh.. only one suggestion.. or comment. Throttle management. Be very careful on landing that you don't just cut the throttle and land it, especially on a particularly windy day. Fly it down if you have to, but just don't let it glide. It looks pretty light so it could be a handful without careful monitoring of airspeed (throttle) during landing.

Other than that.. nice job!! That's a nice looking plane. You did a great job with that one.

Best of luck with that and let us know how it goes on that first real flight.

CGr.

I don't know if I would have wanted to attempt it without the assistance of my instructor... Of course, that being said I realy don't consider myself all that skilled when it comes to building things... I can assemble stuff, sure but some of the things you need to know to do, (like squaring the stab with the wing) I wouldn't have know had I not had help... So My advice is this... If YOU think you can do it by all means go for it... But I would at least get someone with experience to check your work.

Good Luck hope this helps!!!

Josh
