Default Great Planes Giant Super Chipmumk

I have been looking at the Great Planes Giant Super Chipmunk. I have an OS 1.20 AX that I am about to spare up by selling the Excelleron 90 and was going to put that engine on the Chipmunk.

I was just wondering if anyone has one and how do you like it.

Thanks.

CG, your selling the Excelleron ? How could you , i thought you and i would be the only ones to still be flying them in 2050. Mine is still flying , and using its third engine now, so who ever buys it will be getting the best of the best airframes.

Hi Bill.

Well, I have not yet sold it. It still sits there, fully assembled and ready to fly. In fact, if I do decide to keep it, I have to replace the elevator cables. I have vinyl covered kevlar to replace the plain kevlar that I originally used.

I am just putting out feelers about the Chipmunk. In fact, I am not beyond buying a new OS 1.20 AX for the Chipmunk and just keep the Excelleron.

Beautiful plane. Fantastic finish.

It's - BIG -, not the lightest plane, but decent.

I helped a guy at our field to tune and maiden it.

I believe he was powering it with a Saito FA-180.

The plane flew beautifully. It ate up a lot of sky. Touched down nicely.

Thanks, opjose

I still have not yet decided what I want to do yet. It's an ARF so if I do decide to get it, assembly is a short term project.

As you can see from Madgenius, there is some opposition to getting rid of my Excelleron 90. I have two pattern planes as you can see from my signature, a Venus II and the Excelleron 90. Both fly great. The Excelleron is more complex with all the cable for the pull-pull rudder and elevator setup, but it does fly nice.

I'm sure, like everything else, I will make a snap decision and either get it or not.

Thanks for the quick 'report'. I've heard good things about this plane, and thought it might be a good one.

I still have to finish my Seagull Super Star 120, though. It's about 90% done now, only linkage for elevator and rudder remain and it's ready to maiden. OS 1.60 FX on that plane.

You might get better response to your questions about this airplane at the scale or other threads where experienced flyers communicate. I've seen this airplane and it captures Art Sholls Chipmunk, far better then the Goldberg version. Pretty, didn't see it fly and would have loved to. Did see Art fly his and it was stunning!

There is a guy at our club that has the Goldberg chipmunk and it really performs great. Of course he is also a great pilot and that helps. I see him fly it very low and slow inverted down our runway and it awesome. Makes me think he is going to stall right there at the end of the runway as he likes to slow way down and pull up to almost stall the wing then powers gently up. I dont know how the Greatplanes version looks as I have not seen it fly in person. Wonder if they have a vid of it.....now I gotta go look.

Looks like the GP chipmunk has a fiberglass fuse. Not sure I would like that.

If you've seen the plane, and/or flown it, you would not worry about this.

The wingspan is quite wide relative to it's size so it does nicely.

Would worry or would not worry?

Mode one: I put it here because this forum gets a lot of exposure from both experienced and not so experienced people. I just am looking for input to help me make the decision.

Sorry: would NOT worry...

I'm still trying to relearn how to type with all of my fingers again.

The plane floats in quite nicely. It's not a balsa floater, but it can approach and land very slowly.

The extensions on the wings seem to prevent tip stall at low speeds.

Very nice plane.

Ok. Thanks. It goes in my list of what I want to get before summer...

Being the fickle character that I am, that list grows almost weekly..
