i just purchased a Great Planes Synapse. I am using the Hitec Micro 05S 5 Channel Receiver with Auto-Shift and the SS-25 ESC. When I connect the battery, the elevons work right away, but it takes the motor anywhere from 3-5 minutes to power up. I am a newb and would appreciate any advice on this matter.

Have you checked your instruction manual for how to arm the ESC?

I was just thinking the same thing.
You may have inadvertantly armed the ESC messing with the sticks is why it worked when it did.
Most ESCs require your throttle stick AND throttle trim switch to be in the lowest possible position when you apply power to the ESC.
This is for safety so that your motor will not start when you are plugging your battery in.
If your throttle and trim are all the way down it should only take about 10 to 20 seconds or so for your ESC to arm, most will beep or flash lights or something to let you know what is happening.

Yup and some ESC's require that you move the stick to full throttle and back down before they will ARM, as a safety and calibration feature.

This way the ESC can figure out the range of the TX's throttle signal.

As everyone states. read the manual about arming the ESC.

Sometimes GP/Tower ( and E-Flite/Horizon too! ) does not provide the ESC manual, but you can typically find these on-line.
