get the hobby zone super cub good beginer plane.

simmo
Unfortunately it is NOT a "good beginner's plane". Ever seen one used as a club trainer? Or even permitted in training certification classes?

Instead RCKen's list is a pretty good starting list for beginners.

I'll second the HobbyZone Super Cub !!!!!!
Hi there opjose a beginners thread without you critisising the Super Cub just wouldn't be the same !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yawn !!!!!!
Jamie,
Think you need to decide which route you're going 1st, whether you're going to join a club and get an instructor which is the best way to go or are you going to be self taught in a local park / field as in my opinion different planes are best suited for different situations.

Simmo,
Couldn't agree with you more !!!!!!!
As a teach yourself to fly with no instructor avialable park flyer absolutely fantastic plane to start with and to learn the basics - the thousands of people who have done exactly that and have now moved on and become decent pilots flying full on 3D machines are testament to it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In effect it does exactly what it says it does on the box and who can citisise that - unless you have your head stuck in the sand or elsewhere that is ?????????
Again I do re-iterate the club and instructor is the better route if it's an option thats open to you and in which case would look at an aileron plane to start with and if you wanted to go Foam / Electric rather than Balsa / IC would have a look at the Multiplex range and their MiniMag or Magister depending upon size / budget etc !!!!!

Contrary to what one pther person posted on here, there's absolutely no reason why you can't do your A Certificate with a Super Cub if you wanted to !!!!!

You bet, bad advice for a newbie to use a HZ Cub as a trainer... it's a disservice to the newbie to suggest that plane... especially if they are interested in progressing going beyond the 3CH park flyers.

I don't know how you do it in England, but around here, 3CH Cubs are not sufficient to certify nor train with.

You would be required to either use a club trainer or bring in a 4 channel plane.

That alone says a lot...

Opjose,
Maybe we should start an idependant thread and stop gate crashing other peoples and thrash this out once and for all but if thousands of people flying alone with no instruction have been successful with the Super Cub and those very same people are then saying what a great beginners plane it is and how they've gone on and prgoessed to bigger and better things form there how can you just damn it.

I agree there are better planes for if you do have an instructor to hand and you won't outgrow them so quickly BUT that's not everbody's situation and to just damn something that SOOOOOOOOO many people have had success with and praise so highly - because it's not your way and yours is the only way - personally I think is being totally blinkered and arrogant - I'd like to use another word but probably not suitable for the site.
As you've said the whole point is to try and get newbies up and flying successfully and thousands have managed that with the Super Cub on their own that's not suposition that's fact !!!!!!!!
My 1st plane which was a Christmas present and had ailerons lasted me all of 8 seconds on Boxing day before it was totally destroyed as I did the classic it started to roll, now I'm upside down in a panic (no instructor to take off, get it in the air, climb to a safe height, trim it to hands free THEN hand me the box and get me out of trouble when I need it) and did what most beginners in that situation do and pull up elevetor rapidly increasing the speed and severity of it's demise !!!!!!!!!
On advice I then bought the Super Cub and haven't looked back and now fly 3D with the Extreme Flight Extra and the Multiplex Acromaster (amongst others) but I still look back and it was the Super Cub that got me through those 1st few nerve wracking flights and the crunches I had it was easy to repair (including having a tree surgeon climb 60 ft up the tree I'd hit at full throttle to get it down and was able to fly it again with no repair) and there are thousands who will have a similar story to me so I'm sorry but it doesn't deserve to be damned - it's what kept and restored my faith in this truly amasing hobby after my 1st bad experience !!!!!!!
Every time I see you damn the Super Cub I will object but don't get me wrong I totally accept it has "it's place" within the market place depending upon circumstance and if someone is going the club / instructor route there are better options !!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad you've done well with the SuperCub.

That you have, speaks more to your own tenacity than anything else.

But it is not a suitable plane to recommend as a trainer.

I've already gone into the reasons for all of this at length, so it does not bear repeating.

As I've mentioned, it is NOT accepted for certification, which alone points to it's unsuitablity for a newbie. Note that other electric planes ARE accepted...

By recommending it to a neophyte you may be forcing them to then go out and purchase another plane to start their training and certification with.
As such, it becomes a needless expense.

I've seen too many people arrive at our field having made this mistake thanks to a poor recommendation.

It may be great for someone who will fly in their backyard, and only in light breezes, but few newbies interested in RC flight limit themselves so much.

You may not like to hear this, since you enjoyed yours so much, but it doesn't make any of this less true.

There are other much better planes for the neophyte.

e.g. RCKen's list.

Opjose,
Didn't want to say it before but you're totally anal in your opinion, anyone who so blatently damns what has worked for so many other people and won't listen WHATEVER can only be deemed a complete idiot !!!!!!!!!!

You WILL NOT take anybody else's opinion into account and that's where you're so wrong and unless you can come up with something a little more credible and accept an alternative point of view apart from just your "opjoe's way" from now on your opion is worthless as it's not unbiased nor takes into account what circumstances they happen to be learning in !!!!!!!
You could have been like me and said that for different circumstances different planes may suit better but not the second someone mentions the Super Cub you don't even bother to ask what their experince is, if they're joining a club and will have an instructor you just berate the product and that's where you totally loose any credibilty at all and as I mentioned are totally blinkered !!!!!!!!!
Stop damning it, it has a place within the market place and if with the thousands of testament before you can't accept it, the more you bleat on the more anal you're showing youself to be, or is it the thousands are wrong and Opjose bless his soul is the only person that's right because that's how you're coming across !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any chance you can change your sign in to anal instead ???????????
The more you refuse to accept that someone else might have an alternative the more you undermine yourself !!!!!!!!
