I just put up a replacement at our field It is the same setup as the site RC ken's showing. Add a length of 3/4" hard conduit and something to clamp it to and you are good to go. Well almost. Take the bearings out and scrape the paint off them. Our sock wasn't tracking so go when I left the field yesterday. I've got to do the bearing fix tomorrow.

Our club uses the 8P windsock from [link=http://www.bestwindsocks.com/HTML/windsocks.html]Windtek[/link] and they last about two years before the fabric needs replacement. We leave it out year round. The frame is going strong for six years now.

I'm not sure how long the frame had been up at our field, but one of the guys took it out a couple weeks back. It was nowhere as strong as the the one I just put up. I pity the plane that hits this one.

The old one also had a "pre-fill" setup so about 10" or so was always inflated. The Owls and Vultures loved it. The top of a new sock would shreaded in a couple weeks. We left them up until they blew off. I"m hopping that this design prevents the bird damage. Time will tell.

We just put up some surveyor's tape on a pole. You can tell the wind direction and strength at a glance and it is cheap!

That is true, but you can't get as much pit converstion about the guy who hit the tape as you can about the guy who wiped out the windsock
