Default H9 Pulse 40 setup question

The Hangar 9 Pulse XT 40 ARF manual says that two 9" servo extensions are needed, as well as a 6" Y harness, to install the aileron servos. I have a 6ch Tx and 8ch Rx, and was wondering if there is a better way to set this up? (also if 8" extensions would be long enough, as that seems to be what's available, at least for Futaba)

Anyone have experience with this plane?

Thanks.

Setting up the ailerons with a Y-harness is the easiest way to run two aileron servos with a radio. It can be done by using two channels on a radio (if the radio supports it), but in my opinion it's just a waste of a channel on the radio. The biggest reason why two channels would be used it to put flaperons on a plane, and those usually cause more problems than they are worth. Your best bet is to just set up the plane according to the instructions.

You don't have to use Futaba brand extensions, Y harness, switch, ect... any brand will work.
Just buy it with either Futaba "J" connectors OR "U" connectors ("U" connector= Universal and will fit any brand radio)
I would think 8" will be long enough though and "Y" harness is the easiest setup and the way I set all of my planes up.
I like to put a piece of 3/8" shrink tubing over the connector on the extension so I don't have to worry about it coming loose in the wing.

Here's a great source for extensions for all radio brands. [link]http://cermark.com/index.html[/link]

Many RCU reviewers use extensions from Cermark.

FatOrangeKat,

I would recommend using the buddy box with an instructor until you become familiar with this airplane. I recently had a student that was soloed for a few months buy one. I helped him check out the airplane and stood with him for his first flight. He took off on the first flight and immediately started porpusing all over the sky despite my suggestion to not 'move' the sticks but to put 'pressure' on the sticks to avoid the possibility of overcontrol. The airplane was also a little out of trim, which didn't help. He quickly began to really get behind the airplane, so I recommended he give up the TX. He handed the TX to me as the airplane became a small speck flying all over the place going in and out of strange attitudes. I trimmed it out and flew it for a few minutes before landing it. The throws were as recommended, but still a little much for him, so I showed him how to put in some expo. Moral of the story: yes, it's a good second airplane, but NOT your trainer. It is faster and more responsive. These are actually good characteristics but take some time to get used to. Raise the throttle slowly for takeoff and be gentle with the sticks. Learn to anticipate the need for rudder on the takeoff roll. When you're nervous you will inevitably move the sticks more than you think, so like I recommend, imagine just applying 'pressure' to the controls.

Have fun, but be careful and take it slowly-

I definitely plan on flying this model on a buddy box for at least a few flights. I did fly a low-wing cherokee last night with plenty of throw and did quite well! (was on a box for that, too). I love the fact that the plane doesn't fight against you when you want to bank! Anyway, thanks for the advice. I've been working with a really good trainer (completely off the cord! ), who is known at the club for actually flying planes, and not letting the plane get 'dragged around behind the prop". I was told this is why he likes me taking off at 3/4 throttle, and actually flying the plane down the strip and into the air. I told him about my plane and he's gonna help me get it started (when the time comes, which won't be for another few months).

Thanks again.

I met FatOrangeKat last night and saw him fly. I wouldn't worry about him, by the time he gets the Pulse XT in the air he will probably be a pro on every plane at the field. Will you be at the field this weekend if it does not rain?

I have to answer this question in a slightly different format: I will be there this weekend if the weather people predict it will not rain by tomorrow AM, which doesn't really say much about anything!

Great to meet you yesterday! Any friend of the Nexstar is a friend of mine Green Mountain RC club rocks, I hope you stick around, so many great and fun people to be around, as well as some really great trainers.

Be well,

Garfield

I will definitely be sticking around, I am just so looking forward to the day that I am comfortable enough to get off the buddy box so I can fly more than just Wed nights.

See Ya Soon

There are trainers on saturday, too, though they're also flying their own planes. Also, you can hook up with them (get phone numbers) and fly on other nights as well, from what I hear.
