Is it even possible? I've seen two stroke smokers with a coil around the exhaust to heat the smoke fluid but I've also read that the temperature is not enough. Any ideas on this?

Very possible, but skip the heating coil inside the muffler - it just robs the heat that you so desperately need.
Here's some great info on how and WHY smoke systems work - including the easy-to-make home made smoke system that I use:

i have done it in the past with my 91fx. it smoked fairley well nothing close to a gas engine, but you could definately tell when it was "smoke on". i had copper tubing wraped around fins, and used mdw smoke oil. good luck

I would like to put smoke on a Saito .82. I have the Macs system (no pump) and I have a Perry VO22. The combination of both is what I was going to try in that the pump would draw (and regulate) the oil to the muffler and the valve (servo connected) would turn the system on and off and a check valve sprinkeled in there somewhere. I would love here if this would work and see someone draw this out for me?

Minnflyer,
I tapped the muffler extension pipe 1/4" outside the motor to inject the smoke fuid there. Now with the pump, how should I plumb up the tank. Leave the vent open? Hook it to the crankcase vent? ?????
I'm lost again.

Open it is, I'll add a piece of fiuel line to it to get it to vent outside the aircraft (probably to the down side of the plane).
Ok I'll hookit all up and lets see what happens. I guy told me last year when I bought the smoke unit to put a little bit of very corse steel wool in the muffler to help it heat the oil. He was refferring to a OS 2 stroke engine that had the big muffler. Have you ever heard of doing this, I would think it would cause performance problems with the engine.
P.S. I read part of your article and I won't call it a motor anymore, thanks.

I agree that I think steel wool would affect the performance of the engine. I'm not saying, "Don't do it", I'm just saying, "Don't do it YET"
Remember - KEEP IT SIMPLE. The less you have, the less is likely to go wrong.
So don't pre-heat, don't put anything in the muffler, don't do anything beyond a basic system at first. If it works, you obviously didn't NEED to do any of that stuff. If it DOESN'T work, THEN it's time to start experimenting.
One thing worth mentioning... Add a third line to the tank for filling and emptying. If for any reason you land with extra oil, you'll want a way to empty the tank before leaving the field.
