Abbreviations and acronyms
This is something that has bugged me, and I'm sure many others here. Some people come to a beginners forum and then create a post that has lots of abbreviations and acronyms without any explanation of what these are.
Usually, someone understands at least part of what is being discussed, and can try to give a good, sensible reply. Often, though, the question gets passed by because the reader has no idea what the discussion or question is about, but if that person knew what was being discussed, could offer a good and sensible reply.
I often try to put a definition to acronyms I may use. Perhaps that's from writing and reading so many technical procedures where descriptions or definitions of acronyms and abbreviations is required.
I guess what I am asking posters to do, and of course, this is coming from someone that has absolutely no weight in what gets posted here, is that people at least put something to define what they are using for abbreviations or acronyms in their posts. Remember that the more information provided will usually lead to a better and more reasoned reply.
End of soap box.

RE: Abbreviations and acronyms
Yes, I felt the same, fortunatly someone had the bright idea of describe several abbreviations and explain some acronyms.
In the begining I could not understand something like this:
BTW IMHO there should be a LHS near your area.

RE: Abbreviations and acronyms
full scale aviation is full of abbrevations as well....APU, VOR, DME, R&R...I try not to use them when I respond here....at times I have to go back and re-type because I've used some abbrevations....force of habit
perhaps we should start a standard list
INBD inboard
OTBD outboard
R&R remove and replace
VERT vertical
HOR horizontal
STAB stabilizer
it can go on for ever lol

RE: Abbreviations and acronyms
Interesting. The use of acronyms began with the use of the telegraph as a way of reducing costs (costs to transmit were per word). The military raised it to an artform during the first and second world war. Now the next generation is working to reduce our written language to a collection of abbreviations, acronyms and emoticons in order to speed up text messaging. Where will it all end? Unfortunitly it doesnt end there full scale pilots get weather reports and they generally look like this "METAR CYHU 191200Z AUTO 13003KT 9SM CLR 06/04 A3049 RMK SLP327= " the ultimate in having to decode :|

TLA's (Three-Letter Acronyms) are not so bad, and RCU (another TLA) has a glossary to define most of them. But we DO frown on "Internet Lingo" here. It's far too rampant in the Car Forums to do anything about it, but we "Airplane Guys" can strive to be better than the DCGs (D*MN Car Guys) by speaking (typing) with a little higher standard.

RE: Abbreviations and acronyms
This is a good point to bring up, and even though I have been around 7 decades I have trouble with some of then! If a Soap Box is warranted I would like to mention the people that feel they need to get noticed by using all CAPS in the heading. I follow about evey thread posted so I would say on a given day I get 500-600 emails. It make it very diffecult to easy scan down the list for points of interest. You can't stop them from feeling important I suppose, but generally CAPS are used to indicate LOUD communications!

This has been covered before:

This site will explain a wide variety of acronyms, if you can be bothered to look them up:

Seriously though, I agree with CGr. I had a bit of a struggle when I first started reading these threads. I think sometimes some forget that it is the beginners forum where no one is familiar with the slangs or acronyms.

I heard that you had to be over 6 ft. tall before you could enlist in the Coast Guard. That is because if the boat ever sinks you can always walk back to shore.
