No problem finding 2 1/4 inch nylon spinners, but I haven`t been able to find one with slots big enough to accomodate the blades on an 11x6 APC prop. Engine is an Evolution 46. Anybody got a suggestion as to a brand that might work? Thanks for any help.

Spinners are made to accomodate the smallest possible prop that they figure will be used on that kind of spinner. One can always make the holes bigger (and thats pretty much always been the case for me) but if they were too large to begin with, you couldnt really make them smaller. Im pretty sure there isnt a 2 1/4" spinner made that will just fit that wide a prop. The exception would be aluminum spinners from companies like Tru Turn that custom cut them for certain props. But those would be way more expensive.

Just get out the trusty ol' dremel. I've done it to two of mine now.

I have modified several with a Dremel, having no problems.

If you do so, keep the shape of the openings symmetrical, in order to avoid vibrations.
Also keep the cut's edge smooth and the cut's line round as much as possible, in order to avoid cracks' development.

SIG spinners are supposedly "Cut to fit APC props." Which prop, who knows? They might be able to tell you if you call them.

I believe Tru turn has wide blade spinners that would work. I bought a standard 2" spinner for my sundowner and it wouldnt fir my apc's. I opted for the 2 1/4 ultimate wide blade spinner (tru turn) and my 13X9 fits just fine. I can just barely squeeze a 12x11 into it. I think tru turn can also custom cut you one for what you need. Not sure on the cost though.

I like Tru-Turn spinners, and have a few. But, nylon spinners are 4 dollars and my cheapest TT was 30 or more including the adapter. I have no problems with cutting up a nylon spinner. I just wanted to point out the there are nylon spinners available that claim to be made for APC props.

Thanks carrellh, looks like Sig might be the ticket. I`ll give them a call to verify that their 2.25 spinner will work. For some reason I never really realized that APCs don`t match up well with most spinners.

All of my spinners (5) have needed to be cut, including aluminum ones. I use a hobby knife for the plastic ones and a dremel for the metal ones.

You can also order spinners directly from places such as Tru-Turn... and have them custom cut for you for an additional 9.00.

That's what I do with the larger aluminum spinners.

At one point in time Tru Turn was cutting them for free if you phoned and ordered direct from them. My LHS started to carry spinners under the Magnum brand name and they have turned out to be every bit as good as any of the other makes for A lot less money. They even come with an addapter that sometimes fits the engine you are using!! Not often but sometimes!!! I even found one once that didn't need to be cut for the prop I was using, how often does that happen?? I think that was the first and only time for me.

After many years of putting up with the problems of spinners, I now use the large aluminum or bronze prop nuts that the electric starter can easily engage. No more spinner problems. No more props getting loose. They last forever, never break, and "fit" every prop. One problem solved. Works for me.

alot of mention of tru-turn spinners,which are the most expensive aluminum spinners out there,I have several of them they wern't cheap.
there are several less expensive brands of metal spinners Dave brown http://www.dbproducts.com/ which are close to half the price as the TT and they will cut the prop slots to order.

there is also these I found and have 2 of them, there inexpensive, polished,and come with a adaptor nut in many sizes, there 2 1/4 alum. spinner is 9.50 not too bad of a price for a upgrade from plastic, they don't cut the slots custom one size fits all, but its easy to open the slots up slightly, as long as your carefull .

I know tru-turn is expensive but I see the spinners as long term investments. I dont mind paying more for a spinner knowing I can use it again (as long as the plane doesnt go down in the woods or fly off in some random direction). I actually dont care about the brand I just want it to look and fit right.
