Dumb I know but can you successfully steer a fixed nose gear with the rudder? Just taking more room?

"depends", but yes, in theory you can. You might find a combination that won't turn though, I'm sure it will vary plane to plane.

I've flown a Global Superfly ARF that had a fixed nose gear screwed right to the firewall. It was VERY SUPRISING how well it taxied on the ground. That's about all that plane did well.

so yes...it actually works better than you may think.

Just hold full up elevator to keep the nose wheel as light as possible. If your on grass it will be tougher, but should work some. I don't have steering on a tail wheel plane and hold down elevator to steer it. Just full down and a bit of power. Comes right around.
