Default what octane gas do you use in your gassers

I have my first gasser and was wondering what octane gas to run through it. the book says 96 to 98 I think but the pumps around here only have 91 or 93 as the top fuel. What is best?

Cool. I was wondering where I would find 98 octane gas. But If the gas at the pump will work thats great. $2.00 WOW. 87 octane is down to $1.53 here.

It's $1.45 here today. Wish it was for you. My mother in Detroit area tells me that Mich has real high taxes on gas.

I have A couple that call for regular and A couple that call for the high priced spread, I met them in the middle so I could burn one grade of gas. I have never really heard any difference in my engines when running different octanes but the instructions call for different blends. Oil is A different story though. None of my engines ran that well on Synthetics??? They all called for blends from 50 to 1 down to 100 to 1 and were hard to tune?? Could have been A me thing? Been know to happen. I went back to my old blend of 32 to 1 chain saw or MC oil and life went back to easy, I like easy. It's not as clean but it just works.[8D] That's just me, talk to three different people about gas blends and there will be three different answers.

All stations here sell the 87 octane fuel. I just looked out my shop door at the gas station a half block down the street and gas is $1.59/gallon today!!

Here's where some of the biggest differences are going to come into play. Some will swear by using Amsoil for there engines and use nothing else. I don't slight them in the least on that issue. It's a good oil and there is nothing wrong with it. But for myself I use good ole fashion two-stroke oil I purchased at Wal-mart. I have several gallon jugs of this oil because I used to own a boat. But I used this oil for my boat and my weedeaters and never had any issues. My boat was 20 years old and the engine ran like it was new. In addition, my weedeaters are 15 years old and they have been used in some of the hottest and most dirty environments and have never had a failure. So with that in mind I use that oil for my planes. Partly because I have it on hand, but more because it's never failed me yet!!

Before any arguments come in. I respect other's choice to use different oils. Any good quality 2-stroke oil will do in your engines. But I do recognize that piece of mind for the owner goes a long way, and it the choice of oil brand provides that then it's a great choice.

Thanks Ken, I thought about that oil and wasn't sure. but your right my weedeater has ran for about 7 years now and never missed a beat. Do you run your plane at 40:1 like a weedeater? Thanks James

I run Sunoco Ultra 93 or 94 If I can get it. Some of my motors say premium fuel some don't. I'm not going to carry more than one fuel can. Using outboard oil is not such a good idea. While it may not cause any problems, it is listed as "TCW" which is two cycle watercooled. These oils are designed around a watercooled motor running at 145 degrees. Air cooled motors run 180 degrees and up. This is just FYI not to start an argument or debate. I also use Amsoil at 50:1 though I have also used other good quality oils.

bdtsr,
No, I don't use "water cooled" oil for my gas engines. I use "plain ole" 2-stroke oil. It's intended market is weedeater, chainsaws, and other 2-strokes. Yes, I did use this same oil in my boat engine as well. This is the same oil I use in my gassers.

Got ya. When I see boat and oil together I figure a TCW rated oil. One of the reasons I use Amsoil is a few of my motors recomend the use of synthetic oils after break in.

Like I said in my first post here. I knew there was going to be plenty of "opinions" on this one. This is one of those topics where people tend to be very brand loyal. Kind of like the discussions of Futaba vs. Jr or Monokote vs. Ultracoat!!

I agree with Ken on everything said, I have no real number one brand of oil, I like both JR and Futaba, but Ken is one of those that is wrong about his covering choice!!! Everyone knows Ultra is the best!! I worked all day on the front of my house, eat your hart out Ken!!!
