Magnum XLS.15a ???
anyone running one of these? whats the flying weight of the model you have it in. what size fuel tank are you using and how long is the flight time?
I'm kinda bored today and was having dirty thoughts of doing a glow conversion on a hobbyzone Supercub I have laying in the garage. I did a brushless upgrade to it swapping the stock 480 can for the 1880kv out of a stryker still using the factory gearbox and prop. now I want to try a glow setup in the little plane. any thoughts????

I have one, its in my SPAD gnat. it runs pretty good and will go 20 min easy on 4 oz of fuel. it takes a few tanks to break in. In the SPAD tradition, you thought of it so you have to build it. hehehe

OK!!! MISSION ON!!!!!
I just returned from my LHS. $97.00 spent on all parts needed for the transformation. I will take pictures of the build and post them up.
this is going to be interesting

All I can say is... HAHAHAHAHAHA! That's going to be awesome until the wings are ripped off mid-flight! What are you planning to cover it with?

RE: Magnum XLS.15a ???
ok, it's alive mahwaaaaahhhahahahahahah here's the pics of the swap.
the first step was removing the old power set up. next I used a hacksaw blade to cut the OEM firewall flush with the fuselage. I fabricated a new firewall out of some spare balsa I had from another plane. I drilled and installed blind nuts in the firewall. I doubled up the left side to set the thrust angle. I used 5 min epoxy to secure the firewall to the fuse.

RE: Magnum XLS.15a ???
I did a mock up to see how much of the cowl I'd need to trim. I had to gut the inside of the fuse and make a support for the tank. I made a servo tray for the throttle servo. I was able to retain the stock location for the flight control servos. I ran the fuel lines through the hole where the ACT sensor was located. the RX battery will be mounted in the factory battery box for now I may need to relocate it if the CG needs some tweaking. I'm going to break in the engine in the morning and hope to maiden it some time tomorrow.
I think it looks gnarly with the motor sicking through the cowl, and it finally matches the paint job
what do you guys think?

I think it will probably be ok, I've ran a brushless set up in it with no problems, but I think this may be a little quicker now I'll have to exercise some throttle management if the wings start to flex too much.
I have some sticker weights I'll use to set the CG if moving the RX battery aft isn't enough. I'll have my wife video the maiden and post it up. funny the things we do to amuse are selfs

First you are INSANE, but also an EVIL GENIUS. are you going to put any sort of covering on the wings to help keep it together, or you just going to try and go flat out and rip them off the first time. I would recommend putting a layer of fiberglass or resin over the wings to help keep them in one place. it will make it heaver, but the motor should help compensate for it. then i think it would be able to fly like a bat outta hell.
Once again all views expressed by me are wrong/bad unless proven otherwise

RE: Magnum XLS.15a ???
The Ace foam wings recommend using the fiberglass strapping tape all the way around once end to end...that is a lot of power for a foam plane....but it looks cool..over in 1/2A we take a $3 kmart plane and saw a few inches off the nose and glue on an .049 good cheap fun....Rog

Probrojoe ran a Parkzone cub with I believe an .061 till it ripped the wings off. Apparently it was too much fun . The Magnum XLS.15 is a real strong running engine, believe me.

the fuse has been shot with clear coat, hopefully that will be enough protection from the glow fuel. I'm about 1/2 way through the break in process, I should be heading to the feild in about an hour

RE: Magnum XLS.15a ???
Maiden flight complete!!! unfortunately the battery's in the camera died just as I was taxing for take off, so no video yet. the flight went well I'm going to add some more weight to the tail, I found myself running out of elevator on slow landings. I really need to get the tune down on the magnum engine. it will idle fine, seems to go really rich through the transition and seems lean on top. maybe it will be easier to tune once it's fully broken in. I did one full throttle pass but cut it short due to the tune. the plane flys good about 1/4 throttle is probably faster then a stock SC 1/2 throttle is faster then my brushless conversion. as it is now I'm not to worried about the wings ripping off, but once I get the tune right maybe that will change

For what its worth its unlikely you will ever get consistant running in that installation. The problem is you have the Spraybar(jet) much to high above the optimum on the tank and even considerably higher than the top of the tank. This is the reason that many models with a shallow nose where the tank is located use a side mounted engine (90 degree), this to facultate the all important jet to tank relationship.

RE: Magnum XLS.15a ???
yes it's a 4oz tank, I have enough room to raise the tank about 1 1/2 inches without any clearance issues. with the tank raised at level flight the top of the tank should be about level with the top of the carb. I'll give that a try and see if that clears up the top end bog. would that also make the engine prone to hydraulic lock?
