Hi need help with a Great Planes F4U Corsair 40. This plane calls for a .40-.46 2-stroke or a .48-.70 4-stroke enging with MonoKite covering, but I would like to use fiberglass covering instead. Would a Super Tiger G-90 engine work on this plane.

I have a O.S. 65LA and a Super Tiger G90 new in box looking for a home. Would like to try to use fiberglass covering on this plane, why not something dirrerent for me to learn..
Let me tell you what I have to work with and you tell me what a good setup would be for each plane.
1.Hanger 9 AFT Hellcat 60. Planing to use a Zenoah G200PU with to battery packs. Still in box but have all the parts even fiber optic kill switch.
2.Great Planes F4U Corsair 40 kit last stages of building. Would like to use Fiberglass. O.S. 65LA or Super Tiger G 90
3.10 year old Eagle 2 63" w/s first R/C plane just started to finish. engine size ?
RTF Planes in Hanger
1. Hobbico Nexstar Trainer with a O.S. .46FXI engine.
2.Hanger 9 P-51 PTS 58" W/S Trainer with a Evolution engine
3. Art-Tech Russian Knight Ducted fan Jet. Electric 2 X EDF 64 fan motors
Plus the birdi for the S3000
So I'm needing a lot of help making up for the 10 years gone from the Hobby.

The Corsair is a "hot" airframe to begin with that has a stiff wing loading (24 oz/in). You can use the .90, but the added weight up front and balancing weight needed in the tail, plus the added weight of fiberglass covering combined with the landing gear designed for a .40 means when you come in hot from the added wing loading you'll likely collapse the gear. Try to slow it down and you'll stall. When the conditions allow you to bleed off speed and flair her in you'll be OK. Eventually the condiitions will not be OK (no headwind). How are your skills at landing at 55 mph and is your air strip long enough for a 200 foot rollout?

Do a web search for Completely Scale RC and read up on how he uses Poly U for glassing. I used the 1/2 oz glass and Poly U and it came out about the same weight as if I would have used Solartex covering, most of the weight gasses off as the Poly drys, about 80%. I then used thinned down Klass Kote paint in two colors. After that I would never go back to using resin or epoxy to glass again. I have another plane on my bench that I plan on glassing but this time I want to try the water based Poly U just to see how well it comes out so I can compare the two types of Poly. I like the LA series of engines and they are very light.

I have a Great Planes Sweet Thing P51 Mustang with a Super Tigre .75 in it and the .75 is the same physical size as the ST.90.
One thing my P51 does not lack is power, and pleanty of it
, I only wish I put the .90 in it.
Make room in far back to mount the battery as my P51 uses an oversize battery for ballast as far back as I can get it

Thanks for the info on the P 51 Do you have any pic's. Also I found out that the P 51 likes to be flowen low when landing. I can put a hatch behind the ply fuse doubler behind the piolet so I can strap it in. If I use 4AA 6v battery pack it about 4oz that should put me back in the ball park I think.

Very good site, I haven't seen that one before. I do about the same thing but on coat 4&5 I mix my poly about 50/50 with baby powder to fill the weave. Most of the powder is sanded off so there is no real extra weight added and by coat #4 the weave is pretty much filled. I used the laquer based poly and the smell/fumes about knocked me over so I'm going to go with the water based poly this time. I also used the 1/2 oz glass just to save that little extra bit of weight. The glassing/paint really helps out on hanger rash and there are no covering bubbles or sags when sitting out in the hot sun. Takes me a lot longer to glass and paint then to cover but the finished product was well worth the extra time.

The G.P. Corsair .40 has open-bay wings and will not be suitable for fiberglass. You could modify it and sheet over the open bays but this will add some weight. And the Super Tigre .90 is only going to make it heavier.
If you really want to fiberglass, why not build the Top Flite Corsair. Bigger plane and fully sheeted, already set up for flaps. I have one and it flies great on an OS .91 two-stroke.

Hi thanks for all the great advice that you have given. Here is what I decided to do with the Great Planes F4U Corsair 40. I thank that I will use the O.S. 65LA engine. The Fuselage will be fiberglass and the wings will be covered in MonoKite. Equipment. 5Cell AA batteries, standard servos, Pill muffler and a 10oz fuel tank.
Would like to know if the 65LA would work for thus setup and how will it handel.

As far as the Eagle 2 is concerned, I learned to fly with one with an O.S. .40fp and a 9x6 prop. Flew great, enough power for normal trainer flight without getting too wild. A .46 would be plenty.
