Buying Glow Fuel in Bulk
#1
A few members of our club is looking for a place to buy glow fuel in bulk, 50 gallons+ . Could you all please recommend me a good place that would have reasonable freight rates and a good enough discount to order 50-100 or more gallons and be worth it.

S&W fuels
Wildcat fuels
Both of them are at about $15 for 5 cases or more of 15% nitro. S&W is 20% oil and doesn't charge for custom blends (all synthetic or whatever). If you get more than 30 cases you get an additional 5% off wholesale. They say it's about a hundred and ten bucks to ship 5 cases, and like a hundred and thirty bucks to ship 30 cases.
I think the best thing to do is get a drum. You have to get taps and portion it out promptly though, but I know pattern clubs do this and pay about ten bucks a gallon.

Can't help you with a local supplier (being that I live in Australia) but I have a local chemical supply company who sells pure methanol in 25 litre lots, nitromethane and castor oil by the litre, and coolpower by the gallon. Ends up costing me about 1/2 the price of buying it premixed from the LHS and I can mix however I want to suit my various engines. I'm sure you'll be able to find a similar supplier locally to you.

We did a 30-40 case buy from Magnum. Our club president talked to them on the phone and got a better price than is listed on the web.

I love the S&W fuels! They are near me and once or twice a year we go there to buy fuel. The owner is also a member of our club and he often has a few cases in his car he is willing to sell. When we go to his shop he will reduce the price by $1 a gallon if we bring our own fuel containers!

I think Rich's Brew and Power Master are both in Texas. They are some of the best made.
Power master is in Elgin near Austin http://www.powermasterfuels.com/
Randy Rich is in Houston http://ritchsbrew.com/ I've used the Rich's Brew fuel for years and never had any problem with it. [email protected]

When buying fuel, you should know the difference between percentage by volume and percentage by weight. The better (honest) maunufacturers use volume in their mix. The rest go by weight. Thus you can buy fuel with an honest volume of oil and Nitro, the two expensive ingredients, or you can buy cheap fuel.

S & W has great fuel and prices, but we're close enough that our club pitches in and pays the gasilone & lunch money to have a member & helper with a big van go and get it (they're in Tatamy, PA).

Here's S & W's price list:

I believe the regular 15% airplane fuel is 15% nitro, 18% synthetic oil, and 2% castor. At about $550/drum, that's about $10 a gallon.

Wildcat has a deal where you can do a bulk fuel buy through your local hobby store.
Our club does a bulk fuel buy through Magnum Fuels every spring, and that has worked out very well. Magnum seems to be very reasonably priced on higher nitro blends like YS 20/20 fuel and 30% nitro blends for 4-strokes and helicopters.

If you get 5-10 cases the prices are even lower.
