What does ACRO stand for?
#3
Based on the limited information I assume you are refering to setting up a JR or Spectrum computer radio. They typically have three settings for aircraft type. ACRO/HELI/GLIDER. So if it's not a glider or a helicopter then set it up using ACRO.

I doubt "ACRO" stands for "airplane", since the only letters in common between the two are "A" and "R". The OP obviously knows that ACRO is the correct mode for an airplane, he's just asking what word it is based on. It seems like ACRO must be short for acrobatic, but why they whould choose that word for the airplane mode is beyond me. Since they seem to have a four letter limit for the mode names, I guess it looks/sounds better than shortening "plane" to "PLAN"!

Acro- can mean "beginning".
Acro is a disguised tribute to the Wright Brothers and airplanes as being first in flight.
At least thats my story.
Cheers.

It's the legacy of tiny displays that were limited in the number of characters they could display.

Are you sure you didn't mistake an "E" for a "C" , because AERO would make sense. This is what Airtronics use for Airplane. Maybe it is a typo, or are you seeing it in too many places? If you only see this on your (one) transmitter, maybe your display is faulty, and it can't display a "E" properly.
Woooops......just noticed where someone said Futaba uses ACRO also, so it can't be your display. I give up????

[edit] Aircraft Crashes Record Office (ACRO)
The Geneva-based Aircraft Crashes Record Office (ACRO) compiles statistics on aviation accidents of aircraft
Doesn't answer the question either but it will sure make me wonder each time I turn on my radio now!

That explains why they chose four letter mode names, but not why they chose ACRO over AIRP, PLAN, ARPL, AERO, etc. The OP was asking why they chose ACRO and what is stands for. So far, it sounds like it is short for "acrobatic", and they just like it better than the other 4 letter mode names I suggested here.

One has to remember that there has been a huge shift in the hobby since then. Helicopters are more aerobatic now than airplanes, but back then? No way, Jose. So many of these little things stick in our hobby. Many of the sometimes confusing contractions in our radio programming have their roots in the tiny displays. It wasn't so long ago that three-letter model naming was considered to be a real selling point, where as now that seems constricting. A very nice radio back then might have had eight model memories or less, with each one assigned just a number. That's why you'll see guys with little pieces of paper taped to their radios sometimes. "1. Cub 2. Extra 3. PT-40" and so on. Pick the wrong model number, and suddenly you've got throws that are reversed and travel that is incorrect. That's why some of the more methodical folks will ensure that their servo horns are all on the same side from model to model. It's also where ideas for nice features such as Model Match come from.

It comes from acrobatic. Doing a google search you will find past RC planes with names like Acro Star, ACRO 50, and the Acro Sport. Full scale pilots refer to aerobatic classes as ACRO class. ACRO seems to have become a common word used to describe aerobatics in an airplane, or an aerobatic airplane itself, though maybe it's dying out.
I couldn't take all the speculation.
