How come on the new post I am getting a message that says do not respond (reply) as this is from a non monitored source. Won't let me open it anyways.

I spent much of yesterday trying to figure out how to use the new format that RCUnivers changed to. I am a very positive person, but I could find nothing good about it. Even old photos would not load up to expand. Is there a way to test changes before actually making the change? Thanks for going back to what it was before.

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!![:@]
I agree 100%
I'm sure someone ment well, but after getting a glimps of the new format last night, I found it harder to navigate and read.
The old system is just fine. please leave it that way.

I thought I was the only one that was seeing that yesterday. I didn't like it either. I have been a member of numerous forums, and RCUniverse is by far the easiest to use. Please don't change it.

Like most things computer, there are initial trial periods. It looks like they thought it was ready to try, so they tried it. I'm sure they meant well, but realized it was not ready so they "rolled back" to this version of the software.
Give these guys a break. If you ever thought making something like this sort of thing work is easy, I've got news for you. A little encouragement wouldn't hurt.
Ever hear of Windows Millenium?

No...it's not "easy". Yes, it takes a lot of work, planning, configuring, etc. I do this sort of thing for a living, and have for many years.
The "grief", I think, was with the very poor job that was done. Just because it's "not easy" is hardly an excuse to do a poor job...at anything.
System migrations and upgrades involve numerous steps...a great many of which were overlooked, ignored completely, poorly implemented, or faulty....to say nothing of the fact that they involve preparation for the inevitable user reaction, which clearly had not been done. Finally, there ought to be a REASON for the migration or upgrade...and there appears to be none.
What happened here last night was, in my opinion (one formed by over 2 decades in the software industry, and management of well over 100 "forums" of all types and sizes) one of the most poorly implemented, ill-prepared, and unprofessional system upgrades I've ever witnessed.
Indeed...I have a hunch that it wasn't SUPPOSED to happen...that what we saw was an ACCIDENTAL "go-live" of something that's being worked on behind the scenes, and was not supposed to see the light of day for quite some time. One of the reasons I believe this is because it's nearly impossible for me to believe that a staff that has demonstrated the skill and quality this one historically has could have so completely screwed up.

I originally chose RCU because its format is much easier to navigate than the traditional format of others. I hope they stick with this one. The new images and home page were neat, but I didn't like the layout of the threads and buttons. Maybe they have a mojave version?[sm=wink_smile.gif]

When I logged on the other day, I was fairly shocked and disappointed. I love RCU just the way it is, and personally couldn't see a reason for change. What really had me worried though was how it had suddenly appeared without any sort of fanfare or discussion. Where did the new look come from? Who was pushing it and why? Did everyone really want something different?
I started a poll/thread in the Clubhouse forum, to try to gauge the feelings about what I called the New RCU. I think it got a couple of great responses from the admins, and I hope they wont mind me posting them here, for those that don't wander over to the clubhouse.

It actually was not a "new rcu" but an upgrade only of our forum software from the previous version to the new released version of same. The new package was not on long enough for anyone to actually see what it could do or why it holds great potential to be far better then what we have here.
We could build upon what we have here to add those same feature but since the latest version HAS them already one has to wonder why we would recode it all from the ground up just to do what the existing package does.
I am confident with everything working correctly that just about any user would come up to speed on it in a day or for those less computer literate maybe 2 or 3 on the outside. Nobody got to see the product working as intended though or long enough to see how it works.
All that said my main concerns with the upgrade is performance. The upgraded version may be too heavy for some older computers or slower laptops. I don't know what percentage of our users were affected but even 5 or 10 percent concerns me. As such we are putting the upgrade on back burner and going to add some features to this codebase we have now which will be less of a "shock" to those who do not want to see changes and love us just the way we are
One thing people should have faith in is my skills especially if you like what RCU is today. It is a product of me and my partner who are programmers and users of the site PLUS member feedback. You have to believe that if we got us to where we are right now that anywhere we take the site we are confident the moves will allow you to love the site that much more. Small changes are certainly easier for end users to adapt to. This one was not small but also not huge if you had a few hours of it working properly just to look around a bit more to see what it actually could do.
In the meantime I tossed a nugget in tonight in THIS forum...you can now embed YoutTube videos into posts with our YouTube tag (just use the button on the editor here and paste the youtube link in between the tags. Easier yet paste the youtube link in the post, highlight it then click the youtube button and it will tag the link for you. Keep your eye out for more nuggets. I don't know how much more we can tweak search as that relies on MSSQL FullText search capability which doesn't hold a candle to the google gold standard. Google does a great job and spoils all of us. On our search page we do have an RCU search by Google which you can use to supplement your searches if ours comes up short. We will see where else we can improve our own search though and take it as far as we can.
thanks for your support

It's absolutely true that the old software is pretty much at the end of it's life. This RCU is running on ASP and the developers have stopped supporting it. The newest software will be on Dot Net platform. The biggest issues we have with the software are behind the scenes and the public will never see it, but it will make things run better on the front end. The new look was simply cosmetic. I have been on the phone with Marc several times in the last couple of days and he pointed out something funny. The complaints that we got from the new look are the same complaints that we got LAST time RCU made an "appearance" change.
Anyway, I spoke with Marc earlier this evening and for now the upgrade is on hold. Marc has some real concerns that the new forum will slow on less than top of the line computers. We're going to be doing some more testing on that. But Marc's word was that if the new forums are slower than what we have now it may never come back. It' something he's going to be taking a serious look at over the next couple of months. Everything is on hold for right now.

This is why I couldn’t get on the other night!! I’m on dialup and I use Netscape 7.1 most of the time. I could not get RCU to load on Internet Explorer either. If I have to upgrade to DSL to log on to RCU it will affect the discretionary income that I could be putting towards R/C interests. My $.02
