Default Most idiotic thing you have done

Ladies and gentlemen.

On the Danish model air plane website, we have a thread concerning whoops when handling model air planes and helicopters. It’s extremely funny, scary like hxxx, and instructive.

Last night I was finishing up my control linkage on my Cherokee, and I soldered the clevises on one end of the rod, and bent the L on the other end, then tried to install it into the plane. That was pretty dumb. I will be starting over tonight with threaded clevises that came with the kit.

I upgraded my girlfriend, who was really cool, laid back and didn't mind me going to play with my toys, to wife status, who thinks she is supreme ruler of all the land and throws a fit when I go play with my toys, that was pretty idiotic.

Three things come to mind. Each was the result of failing to pay attention to what I was doing.

Years ago I decided to swap an Airtronics radio for a JR radio while at the field. No big deal. The evening wasn't half over, and I had plenty of time. I neglected to check all of my controls. For whatever reason, I checked the rudder, elevator, and throttle. As soon as I took off, I noticed a slight roll to the right. I pushed the stick left. Bigger roll to the right. I pushed the stick further left. Nice hole in the ground. Whoops...

It must have been earlier in that same year, because that plane was still in one piece. I was carrying it back from the runway on a windy day. I had the plane in one hand. Felt it start to slip because of the wind. I grabbed the prop. The plane kept slipping, and I re-discovered that an APC prop makes for a fine steak knife. Models look better when bloody, right?

I few years ago I was hooking up a brushless ESC. For whatever reason, I was trying to work quickly. I used some Mickey Mouse method to separate the bullet connectors as I was getting the motor rotation right. Unsurprisingly that didn't work to keep the exposed bullet connectors apart, and I got to see the magic smoke flee the ESC.

3 come to mind for me:

1) First trip to the field with my new DX6i, my first 2.4 radio. Did my normal preflight, got to the "extend antenna" portion, and dutifully tugged on the antenna. Wouldn't budge. Without thinking, I tugged a little harder...it budged...right out of the transmitter.

2) Decided to go fly my 25% PW Extra one fine spring day. Got to the field, unloaded everything from the truck, and began assembly....slid wing tube into fuse, reached for left wing...left wing notably absent. Right wing also notably absent. Returned home for wings.

3) This one was recent...reposted here from the KEN/TEN thread...sorry it's long, but worth it :

ORIGINAL: gboulton

One of the morning shows I listen to on the way to work has a thing called "Show Code". if you do something incredibly stupid, you are honor bound to call the show and share the experience, so everyone may laugh at you.

Call this "KEN/TEN Code".

==========

So, I decided I'd run a couple tanks through the new OS .61 on the Splat, sloppy rich, before going out to the field with it tomorrow for its initial test flights. Got everything together, set the needles appropriately, and began the process of trying to start the thing. I'd expected few, if any, problems, based on past experience with OS's FX line of engines.

Ok. Radio on, plane on, check surfaces, full throttle, prime carb with a few flips, throttle to idle, glow driver on, grab chicken stick, flip...flip...WHACK...

"Whack?? That acted like it locked on me, and tried to kick back."

Check prop...sure enough, small nick from the chicken stick.

"Huh...that's odd. Shouldn't be hydro-locked"

Pull off glow driver, spin prop through a few times...no problems.

Reinstall glow driver...flip...flip...WHACK!

"Uh...this can't be right."

Take off driver, remove plane from holders, turn upside down...no, no fuel running from muffler. Remove glow plug, drain cylinder, nothing. Spin prop through several times, still nothing coming out.

"Ok...absolutely NOT full of fuel."

Reassemble, check for fuel in fuel line, fine, put on driver, flip, flip, WHACK!

DANGIT!

Ok, fine. Frustration gets the best of me, and I grab the electric starter. "Be that way, you tight SOB. I'll get you started."

Whirrrr *sputter cough sputter* WHACK.

Ok...wait...it TRIED to start, but then backfired again. WHAT THE HECK???

At this point, I notice that the prop is pretty chewed up. "All those times it snapped back against the stick, I guess...". Figuring it was dinged enough to throw the balance off, I put a new prop on, and this time attacked it with the starter straight away.

Whirrrr *sputter cough sputter* WHACK! And a prop tip flies off in a random direction...

"Uh...what?"

*smack forehead*

Note to the assembled masses : When starting a plane, do not push down on the plane hard enough that the prop HITS THE GROUND while you're trying to start it.

===============

(For the record, a THIRD prop and removal to a more suitable starting location solved the problem. Started right up with a couple flips, and has had its first tank through it)

Got to field, started assembling my plane, realized flight box was missing. Looked in the car, didn't see it, scratched head. Asked buddy to watch plane while I drove (half hour) home to get flight box. Got home, couldn't find flight box. Called buddy at field, asked him to watch flight box I had placed next to the OTHER bench while I drove back to the field.

Just recently, I forgot the wing and only had one plane in the car!

In my defense, the house was a zoo, I had to get kids to various places before heading to the field and they were late. The only OK part was that 15 minutes after I got to the field, it started raining.

The most idiotic thing I've done? Simple, I learned to fly RC!. It's too addictive. All my time is taken up with planes. Flying them, fixing them, buying new ones, building new ones. The drunks have AA, the druggies have rehab, but we have nothing. I'm doomed......................Can I borrow a tank of 15%, I'll pay you back next week.

Once after driving to the field for about two hours of horrific traffic jam I’m getting there and realized I forgot the canopy of the midstar 40, it sits on the wing and prevents from the muffler cr@p to get into the fuselage, darn it I forgot it and there is nothing to do im not flying without it, the instructions said specifically not to fly without it.

Ever since this canopy never left my car again even now that im not flying the midstar anymore its still in the car.
Besides that I have a second tool box of spares of all I need at the flight line charger, wrenches, plugs, fuel pump, rubber bands, props, spinners everything you can think of doubled, that lesson was learned.

ive forgotten wingtubes ,transmitters, wings, fuel, sunglasses, and the list could go on....but one of the dumbest things ive done was take off with ailerons reversed twice...one time i crashed on takeoff...the other time i was able to correct the problem on my transmitter i had to fly it around really high and concentrate on the reversed ailerons, then when it was high enough i went into the menu on my 10x to reverse them

Damn, it is broke! Even the engine! [&o]

A story from a rookie:

Before my first flight with my Avistar, I practised on FMS for 3 month.

The big day arrived, and everything went very well – starts and landings etc.
I’ve tried making aileron rolls on the sim, but every time it dived to the ground.

“Well, something wrong with the sim”…[8D]

At the field I took her up in 150 feet, and gave full aileron to the right. Sxxx me sideways! [sm=52_52.gif]The plane started diving, as it did on the sim. At MAX 6 feet it had made a 360º turn, and no crash!!!

Trust your simulator, even if it FMS

1. repaired a friend's T-28 for him and forgot to tighten the wing bolt when I tested it. Flew fine until I inverted it. The wing floated back to Earth very calmly, had to buy him a new fuse and prop.

2. decided to fly my parkzone J-3 in a 25mph wind. Hand launched it, flew straight into wind for about a minute and turned right. Plane left the area about 60mph and 200 feet high. Found it 2 hours later, 1/2 mile away, 60 feet high in a Sweet Gum tree.

3. Talking to some one while I filled my Avistar with fuel and forgot to point the vent tube down into my fuel jug. Yep, face full of fuel is not fun, doesn't taste good either.

4. Chased a skunk at work one night with my Super Cub. Had to put it in a garbage bag to get it home. Three weeks hanging in the barn, can of Lysol, can of hairspray, bottle of Old Spice, and a bottle of Frebreeze before I could fly it again. Probably should have put this one as number one.

5. Charging two field batteries with my automotive battery charger on 2amp setting. Charged one and moved leads to the other battery, didn't realize it was facing opposite direction until the smoke started rolling. Lucky it didn't explode, but it did ruin the battery.

5.

Forgot to charge tx; I did one circle and then my tx started beeping; with the low bat symbol[:@], watched everyone else fly that day

Last summer I drove 40 miles to a full size aircraft air show with my plane and field box... and I forgot my transmitter. The R/C Club decided not to show up that day, so I had to drive another 80 miles to get it while my full size aircraft flight instructor kept an eye on the plane until I got back. A little over 160 miles when the trip was supposed to be only 80. [&:]

I'm glad I didn't get a ticket for speeding. [X(]

I guess another stupid thing I did was using a heat gun instead of the iron on a ARF that didn't have much overhang on the edges. To tell you the truth... I can't think of too many dumb things I've done. I don't dare ask my wife... that's just asking for it.
