Yes mixes do that. mix one channel with other, some radios have limited mixes and best radios have many mixes, you may not use all of them but is good to know that you have them.
One example of the use of mixes (and channels) is the Ultra Stick by Hangar 9 which can be assembled with flaps and air brakes. some other planes use one channel for each aileron and elevator halves so you have to mix some channels.
I have an 8 channel radio which has been with me for a while and I have to say that I do not use all channels in any of my planes. My former Ultra Stick .60 used 7 channels and some mixing.
If you plan to go with scale models then more channels will come very handy because in some models you have to add sliding canopies, bomb doors etc.
I do prefer JR radios over Futaba, but it is just a personal preference I know Futaba are great radios and the new one with 10 channels is a great bargain.

Yes it is now unbelievable (at least for me), that a few years ago I had to use one radio for each model I had (I had a total of four). Now I have one radio for all my airplane models and one Heli (Trex), so the investment has been reduced dramatically taking in mind that I have 8 flyable models and two more kits already at the bench.
