Hey all, So i got a good deal on some cool power 30% nitro fuel for the airplane, yep! it was an Impulse buy 4 gallons for $20.00..now i gotta figure out a way to dilute it to 15% or even 20% if possible i normally use 15% cool power in my engines..any suggestions?

You can buy fuel with 0% nitro, commonly called FAI fuel, and mix it to get 15%, or you can buy 10% fuel and mix it for 20%. Whenever I mix fuels I try to use the same stuff - same manufacturer, same type of oil, etc. I don't know how much that matters but it can't hurt. In a pinch I will buy a gallon of 30% from the heli guys and a gallon of 10% from the other guys and mix for my YS 20/20.

Double check your oil content.

You can also sell the 30% for a good profit since you got it so cheap and buy 15%.

so if i mix the 0% nitro with 30% nitro fuel, i will end up ith 15% nitro? and so if im looking t make a gallon just mix half a gallon?

YES but I would make sure the oil was the same type. Most times oils mix OK BUT you can get unlucky.

Mix one gallon each of 0% and 30%, to get two gallons of 15%.

Double check the oil content.

There is a thread here on RCU that comletely discusses mixing fuels to get the right nitro mixture with the right oil mixture. Don't just jump in and do this. Make sure you are using the right combinations. The main issue is making sure that, no matter what nitro percentage you get, be it 13% or 17%, that you get the right amount of oil in the blend.

True FAI fuel is straight Castor oil but here in the states I have found the oil blended in some FAI. Make sure what type of oil you are mixing. The nitro % is easy, it's the oil you want to know about. I have mixed and blended a lot of fuel but it was all from the same manfucature.

I personally would buy more gallons of Cool Power and mix them. Cool power typically has synthetic oil, though it's made by Morgan fuels and there are other blends available. Grab the lowest nitro percent you can get, whether it's 0%, 5%, or 10% and you will have a blend between 15% and 20%. which will work just fine for you.

Look on the fuel you bought for an oil content, probably in the 16% to 18% range. This is the most critical number, and you want to make sure the fuel you buy to mix has as much or more oil than what you already have. No harm in adding a little extra oil, there IS harm in lowering the oil content to an unsafe level, which should be specified in your engine manual.

18% oil is a good general oil content. You can use 16% but it would result in increased power and a shorter life expectancy of your engine. Some engines like YS like 20% oil. Some fuels come with 17% claiming they have 'advanced' oil for lubrication and thus can afford 1% more methanol for more power.

no, actually i got this fuel in the orginal shipping box, the gallons were sealed and made in 2008, i bought it from a guy who i previously bought two r/c airplanes from, its good stuff just too much nitro

If you mix both gallons equally, like in one container or by measuring out equal parts, you get the average of each of the contents:

(20+0)/2=10% nitro

If one was 18% oil content and one was 16% oil content:

(18+16)/2= 17% oil

etc.

I would mix it in a 8 ounce tank before diving into a whole gallon. I dilluted 65% nitro with FAI. The 65% nitro was boat fuel, it was on clearance for $17 a gallon.
