Default Sim v/s actual model

Hi to all,

actually I am not exactly a beginner; have had some experience with 3D planes as well. But am out of touch recently having not flown in the off-season. Was on the lookout for a easy to fly aerobatic plane that I can recover my confidence on. Recently bought the Realflight G5 and tried out the VenusII on it. I was able to transition to the plane as if I am flying it for years (practiced on a Supersporter 1600 on the Reflex earlier). I am very comfy with this plane on the sim atleast. Have removed the expos settings that are there by default to zero expo and reduced the throws by 5 deg to make it easier to fly.

What I want to know is, does the model behave exactly like the sim. There is a VenusII on my field but it is still in breaking-in so wont get my hands on it anytime soon. I also want to confirm this as I will also be practicing on the Reactor 40-70 on the sim soon and the same plane is still in the box...I will be putting it together soon

I currently fly a Venus II as a pattern trainer and have also flown the V II on the simulator. The simulator Venus although not the real airplane is a pretty good representation of how it flies.

Hope that helps

some airplanes fly better than others,,,,,,but a sim is a simulation of life. not life itself......there is no subistute for flying.......use the sim to pratice the stick movements,,,then fly fly fly

Sims are close, but to me the biggest difference is that there is no pucker factor with a sim

I agree about the pucker factor. You hit the space bar and you are back in action. Plus there is not really any monitor can reproduce the flying area. It is a 2D image. It does a good job of getting your thumbs and finger going and teaching you orientation. I am going to be upgrading my SIM as soon as I do an upgrade on my PC. I have RF G3.5. I have many hours on it.

Venus II is an awesome flying airplane. Not really a 3D machine as the control surfaces are not huge but it will do some. Great for aerobatics.

Sims are OK but not perfect.

Did I miss something? I have G5 and cannot find the Venus II in the airplane selection menu.

OK, I understand that effects such as wing, turbulence and other planes flying in your path and freaking you out cannot be reproduced in the sim. Also, there is no "fear of crashing". All of that is fine since I tend to fly much higher on the field than on the sim and some distance away from the flying herd. What I want to confirm is does the model itself handle similarly on the sim and the real thing? If so, I may actually buy this kit. I have set it up exactly as I would on the real thing (i.e. 75AX, MAS 13x6 prop, no expo etc). Am currently trying it out my 9CAP and 6EXHP using the pass through cable so that I can ascertain that the control authority is not Interlink specific. This is a bit difficult as the RHS stick on my 9CAP is very stiff making my fingers tire quickly

One thing I've found when comparing all the models I have with the way they fly on sims is they almost always fly better on the sims for one simple reason. The simulator developers almost always present a perfectly balanced and trimmed model. My real models usually require balancing and trimming and that's only as good as I am at it. The two most marketed sims RealFlight and FSOne are not just sims but contain the company's product line models. They went to great pains to insure the models flew well, since the sim also served to advertise their products.

That said, last year I noticed one model was really good on the sim whereas mine was a bit tricky to fly. I discovered that while I'd setup mine with an aft CG, I'd forgotten to re-rig the elevator throw to match. The sim model had both trimmed to each other and it done perfectly. It dawned on me one rainy afternoon while flying that model in the sim when I thought to change the trim for the model in the sim that I hadn't reduced the elevator throws on the real model. I usually do that before the maiden and hadn't.

Now there's a hidden benefit of a sim, if there ever was one.

Do all my models that're represented in the sims fly the same in real life? or fly the same in the sims? Not exactly, but then real life doesn't run on a computer. It's not the sims that might be in error.

Keep in mind that one or the other might be in error, or both. So your answer might be impossible for most humans to know.

There have been a number of discussions about this in the RC Flight Simulator forum.

It's not a very busy forum, but it does cover sims in more detail.

If you want more information about the Venus II there is a 53 page thread in Pattern Forem.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3993257/tm.htm

My Venus is setup with an OS 1.20 AX for power, the choice of a .75 would have the airplane marginally powered IMO.

I totally agree, Steve. Mine is also powered by an OS 1.20 AX and it really flys great.

I've read through a lot of that thread and have learned quite a bit from it. I made some modifications with my initial assembly, using Sullivan Carbon Rods for my elevator and rudder controls. I did other minor things with the build, but nothing of note here. But, if I build another, though, I plan on doing some additional things to the airframe, especially with the covering. I didn't iron it out as well as I should have and some of the covering came off. After fuel gets on it, it's very tough to get anything to adhere.

Anyway, I flew it in RF-G5 last night (I found it in their EP-2 that I already had.. they call it Venus II 3D for some reason). I though it flew pretty comparable to the real thing, at least compared to mine anyway. I did spend a lot of time getting the CG right on the actual model, so it flys just about exactly the same as the one in G5.

I would love it if G5 had the Skylark70 in the collection. That's a nice flyer too. Sort of a pattern primer aircraft.
